In the light of massive help coming from Greece to Türkiye, I want to share a song a song which is an old fisherman song of Istanbul from 19th century. In the song Yanni and Mehmet is making a conversation about their loves and their similarities. On the Bosphorous Yanni cries at sunsets and Mehmet, sitting next to him, drinks and sings to him.
The lyrics:
mes tu vosporu ta stena o yanni klei ta dilina ke o memeti ple tu pini ke trogudai tu
turkos ego, ki esi romyos ki ego laos, ki esu laos esi khristos ki ego allah omos ki dio mas ah ke vah
me ligi agapi ke krasi methao ki ego methas ki esi pis ligo apo to tasi mu adelfi ke kardasi mu
turkos ego ki esi romyos ki ego laos, ki esu laos esi khristos ki ego allah omos ki dio mas ah ke vah
In English:
I am Turkish you are Greek
I ve my people you have yours You believe in Christ,
I believe in Allah But what falls to both of us is to say “ah and vah”
With a little bit of love and a little bit of wine
You get drunk so do I
Take my cup and drink
What is brotherhood beyond that?
