Why? Why it is so important to speak “local” language? As soon as we can understand each other… what language we speak should not really matter.
Unless you are trying to split the world into “us” who speak the language… and them who don’t. Which is rather silly.
Fun fact: this works in any country. Speak their language and they like you more! 😁
mela i try mest for you guys u
Hey! Foreigner coming to visit for a work thing in a couple months. Will anyone be upset if we don’t try to speak Maltese? Is it easy enough to get around with only English? Where would you recommend going to pick up a few basic phrases?
Thanks so much and we are all SO excited to visit 🙂
I really try but it‘s so hard that you conjugate and decline your words in the front, in the middle and at the end 😭 I wish also you could train Maltese with an app like Duolingo, I just found 3-4 books to learn Maltese and they are also in English so not even my mother tongue…but I also know a lot of ways to swear 😂
I teach in a primary school, from ny experience, foreigner children are speaking better Maltese than Maltese children with Maltese parents…
I’ve been here for 5 years and have been learning maltese most of that time and I still couldn’t write this comfortably in maltese. It’s a difficult language. Although I’m now making progress it’s still very difficult to speak to people and I hardly ever fully understand the reply. I wish there were more resources for learning this language.

That’s all I know besides the swear words 😁
This is good to know. So I really want to learn and speak Maltese anytime I come to Malta, but I wasn’t sure how well it would be received. Believe it or not, I’ve encountered some people who hate it when I speak their language, especially those who speak English very well already.
Although I’ve not actively studied Maltese, I do actually understand a lot of it. I’m from the UK but have relatives on my Egyptian side of the family who live in Milan, whom I’d speak to in Arabic or Italian. As a result Maltese feels very familiar, but I wouldn’t get a lot of opportunities to practice it outside of Malta which kinda makes it difficult to become really good it.
