The Slow Death Of Heathrow Express – London Reconnections

  1. Pretty sure Heathrow Express has/had the most expensive First Class per mile in the UK. Arguably one of the most pointless as well.

Not surprised if Cross/Purp/Liz kills it off. Another 10-15 minutes to journey times is no real loss to any passengers

  2. Cost of a ticket has always been ridiculous. I’ve always used the piccadilly line for cheaper, takes longer but its much cheaper.

  3. Not surprising, its a service designed to rip off unsuspecting travellers heading to/from Heathrow.

In advance it sounds reasonable, one way can be as little as a fiver.

On the day of its £25 one way.

Piccadilly line is the slowest option but costs a fiver on the day one way.

Elizabeth line is £12.50 and takes 35 minutes from Paddington vs 30 minutes on the express

So on the day elizabeth line is half the price and only 5 minutes slower.

  4. I’ve taken it a couple of times (expensed to work).

But i always flew from terminal 4. Quickly realised it was a total waste of money. Might as well just take Heathrow connect or the tube.

The biggest crime though is the lack of train connection from Heathrow to outside the M25. I know you can sort of get to Reading but I once tried to get from Camberley to Heathrow. 20 minute drive. Took me over an hour with two trains and bus. Total joke.

  5. Hate how predatory they are towards visitors. They have signage, personnel, kiosks, advertising all over Heathrow arrival terminals and make it sound like they’re the only way to take a train to London, and have no obligation to tell people that there are other options like ordinary trains that take only slightly longer, or taking the Piccadilly or Elizabeth lines. For a group of 3 or 4, even getting a cab taking you to the door of your hotel would often be cheaper than the Heathrow Express.

  6. Heathrow Express has more or less been for the business market – which is the part of the aviation market that has seen the slowest recovery.

I suspect there’s more to it than just a competing line opening – there can’t have been many tourists using Heathrow Express.
