Dan Walker shares warning with followers after bike crash

  1. Amazing how whenever the subject of helmets is brought up, people can’t seem to understand that telling people to wear a helmet and educating drivers on vulnerable road users are not mutually exclusive things.

No, “wear a helmet” is not being used as excuse for people to drive dangerously. It is just basic common sense that you protect the most important organ in your body when you are doing an activity that places it at risk.

Likewise, making roads safer for cyclists through the education of drivers does not negate the benefits of wearing a helmet.

  2. I find it really strange so many motorists will get uppity about people riding bikes without helmets, a lot more lives would be saved if people on bikes weren’t passed so close, given space and not bullied off the road at times. Also better cycling infrastructure would help too

Even though its possibly useless in the event I’m hit by a car I still wear a helmet though

  3. He should be off the road and in a cycle Lane (which doesn’t exist because drivers vote against them) if he doesn’t wanna be mowed down by a 2 tonne death machine…

  4. Wear a helmet. Brains are like eggs, crack the shell enough and the inside leaks out. Concussion alone can cause seizures etc. Wear a fucking helmet.

  5. Anyone else reading this discussion with a slight sense of bemusement? Seems runny to me to see the furiously principled stance people take to wearing basic PPE.

  6. I used to cycle to work, and always wore a helmet. I eventually stopped because I was fed up of getting knocked off my bike by drivers who would literally risk my life to save a couple of seconds.

I don’t think there’s any negative to wearing a helmet, but the main thing that would help keep cyclists safe is drivers treating them with respect and giving them enough space on the road.

  7. And if he wore a full face helmet he would of probably have been even better off. Why cyclists don’t wear full faces is beyond me… guessing being “aero” is more important.

For some reason, gloves are forgotten about, i mean 90% of the time, your hands hit the ground first.

When i’m mountain biking in a bike park, i’m wearing full body armor, and i don’t have tons of metal speeding past me, worst i’m going to do is end up hugging a tree.

  8. Maybe he should also share a warning that it’s better to use a specially designed cycle lane that goes under the roundabout to whichever exit the cyclist desires, rather than enter a FOUR lane roundabout

  9. I don’t understand why people are so anti-helmet.

The UK is not the Netherlands. Our roads are not optimized for cyclists. Wear a helmet to help mitigate any risk, or don’t. It’s completely up to you if you want to break your skull.

  10. Strange people on here arguing against wearing a helmet. It’s not victim blaming. It’s road safety advice. Yes, in a perfect world you would be able to cycle through red lights and up and over pavements around pedestrians all whilst feeling the breeze through your hair but… Just in case an accident or a collision occurs, whether it’s your fault or a car driver, wear a helmet to reduce the risks of injury. Simples.

  11. Wear a helmet so drivers can mow you down on roundabouts.

Outstanding UK journalism – Oxbridge massive brain I’m sure.
