But worthwhile. Hopefully all affected parties will get a voice
Can’t be that difficult a debate.
* Has the war on drugs been a success in eliminating drug use and crime?
No
* Has the country that started the war on drugs continued the war?
No
* Has any country legalised or decriminalised drugs successfully?
Yes.
It’s all going to boil down to the perception of whether or not there are votes in it for them at the end of the day. This is what motivates the vast majority of the political class. Also change can me promised and never come to fruition, remember FG had the abolition of USC on their last election manifesto.
Will it though? The evidence is overwhelming. I look forward to seeing the exact recommendations, but I really can’t imagine it going any way other than full decriminalisation of all drugs, plus some sort of legal avenues for cannabis.
The citizens assemblies have proven that they can produce highly evidence based recommendations without getting bogged down by 1970s scaremongering.
Everyone in Leinster house broadly knows what the right policy on drugs is. We could implement it pretty quickly if the political will was there. They’re only using the citizens assembly as cover to avoid having to make a controversial decision themselves. But it’s obviously pretty much a foregone conclusion
