This is a special megathread. **One year ago, Russia invaded Ukraine, but Ukraine has prevailed**.
– [As shown in this Reuters Infographics special](https://www.reuters.com/graphics/UKRAINE-CRISIS/ANNIVERSARY-SURVIVAL/movaklxlmva/), at one point, the Russian Army were at the doorsteps of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. But it never fell. This where the infamous [60km line of Russian tanks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Kyiv_convoy) was first found.
– Reuters also has a [special with pictures](https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/ukraine-crisis-anniversary-timeline/). Nothing too gore-y, but can be devastating.
– [The Guardian focused on Mariupol](https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2023/feb/23/mariupol-the-ruin-of-a-city), a city that was besieged for months until it fell to the Russian army.
– [‘Never saw such hell’: Russian soldiers in Ukraine call home](https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-intercepts-2b14732d88b3f58d4a9d0b2b562bdb28), by the Associated Press, shows the horror that Russian soldiers go through as well.
– [The Financial Times also has infographics and maps](https://www.ft.com/content/4351d5b0-0888-4b47-9368-6bc4dfbccbf5) and overlook the situation, including the battle of Bakhmut.

This megathread is meant for discussion of the current **Russo-Ukrainian War**, also known as the **Russian invasion of Ukraine**. Please read our [current rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/wiki/community_rules), but also the extended rules below.

### **Current rules extension:**
Extended [r/europe ruleset](https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/wiki/community_rules) to curb hate speech and disinformation:
– While we already ban hate speech, we’ll remind you that hate speech against the populations of the combatants is against our rules. This includes not only Ukrainians, but also Russians, Belarusians, Syrians, Azeris, Armenians, Georgians, etc. The same applies to the population of countries actively helping Ukraine or Russia.
– **Calling for the killing of invading troops or leaders is allowed, but the mods have the discretion to remove egregious comments**, and the ones that disrespect the point made above. The limits of international law apply.
– **No unverified reports of any kind in the comments or in submissions on r/europe**. We will remove videos of any kind unless they are verified by reputable outlets. This also affects videos published by Ukrainian and Russian government sources.
– **Absolutely no justification of this invasion**.
– In addition to our rules, **we ask you to add a NSFW/NSFL tag if you’re going to link to graphic footage** or anything can be considered upsetting, including combat footage or dead people.
### Submission rules
These are rules for submissions to r/europe front-page.
– No status reports about the war unless they have major implications (e.g. “City X still holding” would not be allowed, “Russia takes major city” would be allowed. “Major attack on Kherson repelled” would also be allowed.)
– **All dot ru domains have been banned by Reddit as of 30 May**. They are hardspammed, so not even mods can approve comments and submissions linking to Russian site domains.
– Some Russian sites that ends with `.com` are also hardspammed, like TASS and Interfax, and mods can’t re-approve them.
– The Internet Archive and similar archive websites are also blacklisted here, by us or Reddit.
– We’ve been adding substack domains in our u/AutoModerator script, but we aren’t banning all of them. If your link has been removed, please notify the moderation team, explaining who’s the person managing that substack page.
– We ask you or your organization to not spam our subreddit with petitions or promote their new non-profit organization. While we love that people are pouring all sorts of efforts on the civilian front, we’re limited on checking these links to prevent scam.
– No promotion of a new cryptocurrency or web3 project, other than the official Bitcoin and ETH addresses from Ukraine’s government.

We made this megathread now because it still requires some mod intervention, and also, one of the mods responsible for this megathread might not be around (to make this new megathread).
I still remember [the first megathread about this](https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/t00aon/ukrainerussia_conflict_megathread_6_live_thread/), made one hour after the first reports of missiles falling on Ukraine.
On the modding side, I saw a lot of activity, including from old mod friends, and saw a lot of subreddits channels and servers communicating with each other. There was A LOT of disinformation and dogwhistles in the first week to keep up.
nothing like a fresh megathread.
Not sure if anyone else shares my sentiment but a few days ago there was a feeling of something big coming; now, one day before the anniversary of the invasion, it looks eerily calm. Wagner’s advance has basically stopped. Not much action in Kreminna either (except for another phantom offensive). The biggest news is probably Ukraine bombing Mariupol. Would be hilarious if they somehow hit “propaganda blocks” built by Russia.
[BBC Panorama 2023 – Ukraine’s War Diaries (Feb 21, 2023)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ6LM3pT0Gk)
*When Russian forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Panorama asked five Ukrainians to start filming their lives. The result is a powerful documentary marking the first anniversary of the war through shocking and heartwarming personal stories.*
*Featuring people from across Ukraine, including a female paramedic experiencing the brutality of life on the front line, a TV presenter who rescues civilians under fire, a 19-year-old army volunteer, a wedding photographer turned war photographer, and a young couple swept up in the horror of their home town being occupied by Russian forces.*

[*Western nations have intelligence that Beijing might end its self-imposed restraint on weapons supplies to Moscow*](https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-considers-release-of-intelligence-on-chinas-potential-arms-transfer-to-russia-8e353933?mod=hp_lead_pos1)
NOS: Dutch intelligence services warned alt-right politician Thierry Baudet in 2020 he might be approached by Russian spies.
*The Volkskrant reports that FvD leader Thierry Baudet was warned by the AIVD in 2020 that he or his party might be approached by Russian spies. The intelligence service possibly had information that a young woman in FvD circles had close contacts with the Russian embassy.*
*Baudet has confirmed to the Volkskrant that he had a conversation with AIVD director Erik Akerboom. However, he says he was not warned that someone with close ties to his party was in contact with Russian authorities. Baudet states he found it a “vague and unreal” conversation. According to the FvD leader, Akerboom did say: “I want to warn you: You may be approached by Russian agents”. A Forum spokesperson has confirmed Baudet’s reaction in the newspaper to NOS.*
*Baudet has spoken positively about President Putin on multiple occasions and refuses to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In an interview with an American website last year, he called Putin “the hero we need” and said the president deserves all support in the war against Ukraine. Baudet has been criticized by, among others, former party member Otten, about maintaining close ties with the Kremlin. The FvD leader has repeatedly refuted these accusations.*
*The AIVD will not make further statements about the reporting in the Volkskrant. The service has said to the paper that it may inform a person “when the AIVD sees interest in a person by a foreign actor, regardless of whom.” The AIVD has warned about covert Russian influence efforts in our country before.*
*On monday, it reiterated the possibility of covert influence efforts in a report on the Russian attack on Ukraine, although “the Netherlands seems to be on the Russian radar less than several other, mostly larger European countries.” The service does warn about “anti-institutional extremism expressing itself in a narrative about a supposedly nefarious elite”, and that people who think this are often also pro-Russian. The security services say this “pro-Russian attitude” makes these people “likely more vulnerable to covert Russian influence.” Baudet’s name was not mentioned in connection to this last statement.*

Thierry keeps on being Thierry. The story about this young woman fits nicely with the earlier reporting on his possible financial contacts with a Russian man probably connected to the Kremlin in some fashion, although you never know what the guy has cooked up to make himself seem more interesting/important. Him confirming that the damn director of the AIVD warning him an then saying ‘but I though that’s pretty vague, so whatevs!’ is prety rich too.
