Probably because the vast majority of people have valid voter ID as it is and if you don’t they’re probably not all that democratically engaged.
People probably won’t be bothered with it until a GE is just around the corner, at which point if it’s going to be a requirement then labour, etc. will do a big push to get people to get one. But none of that has happened yet. It’ll be interesting to see what kinds of problems emerge with the system at that point.
It’s blatant gerrymandering. Elderly people might not be taking it up, but it seems their bus passes will be accepted, whereas young persons’ bus ID will not. Elderly more likely to vote Tory. How is this acceptable?
The did voter ID in Northern Ireland and it reduced turnout by about 2%. This is exactly why they are doing it. Hits the poor and the young worst, so it’s all extra advantages for the tories. It’s the most blatant rigging ever.
The plan is clearly working!
The homeless ara also a bit fucked, as they need an address to get the ID card.
Interesting how this bring up the question of turn up numbers. But in theory let’s say less than 50% of the population vote, surly that means the majority don’t want a government right? And considering we operate of what the majority wants, would that not mean they ought to get rid of all current political parties and try again.
I didn’t even know I needed ID to vote until I saw a billboard on the side of an Asda. Told my Tory voter parents, they had no idea either. I think it’s gunna be a shit show come the general election.
Voting was going to be especially low next election anyway, this is going to destroy the illusion of a democratic UK
I’ve heard absolutely and completely nothing about it through the normal media channels. Only here, and I follow politics pretty closely. I even applied for the ID even though I didn’t need it because fuck them.
People could organise and protest. As a point of principle.
The British would accept fascism in an instant. It’s in their nature. They can’t even get rid of the monarchy
Ok so the ID itself is free if you go mess about with a few things but photo ID? Where do you get the photo now? Will they accept some phone camera selfie?
I got one thinking it could actually be used as ID for other things. It’s just a piece of paper for voting.
Lol but they’re all criminals tho… why does it have to be a choice between a giant douche or a turd sandwich.
These need to be opt out not opt in.
Surly if you actually wanted to tackle voter fraud the main target would be postal voting which is far easier and far more open to abuse than in person voting.
The people who aren’t getting ID are the fuckwits that don’t show up anyway.
Is this a bad thing? Could just mean most people have a valid ID already, as previous studies showed.
Looking forward to taking my passport and not voting Tory in the next election.
What’s actually the point? All I’m doing is replacing one self serving person with another who wears red
I can’t vote for anyone else but either red or blue as it’s wasted so it’s either mr douche in blue or mr self serving in red
This was always the point. It’s an attempt to manipulate the voters.
So many people whinging that this is voter suppression even though its free, easy and has been thoroughly advertised and promoted. Worst attempt ever at suppressing voters if that was the intent. Anyone who can’t be bothered to get an ID obviously isn’t that Interested or informed so shouldn’t be voting anyway. Complete non issue.
Ready for downvoted but whatever
If this card is too much of a hurdle for you to vote, you shouldn’t be voting.
Unpopular opinion, but the best democracy is one where the voting public are well informed and actually care. Not everyone should be allowed to vote, the same way that you only want an experienced mechanic fixing your car.
So yeah, if this card is too much for you, you probably weren’t making much of an intelligent vote anyways
Again all this is just your opinion, it’s not expert advice based on statistical evidence. Just a vox pox.
Mentioned this to my parents the other day. They had no clue there would be voter ID. Different reactions from both (one of them is Jewish).
Uproar from one of them, English placency from the other.
Vitriole from me
Cor who’da thunk it eh? An already apathetic, supressed voter base doesn’t want to jump through yet another meaningless hoop in order to do something they don’t see as making a blind bit of difference anyway.
