Discouraging investment is such an outrageous economic policy
Always found it funny how the majority of Europe ETFs are domiciled in Ireland, but they are basically unusable as investments for individuals here.
Correct. Other than pensions (which SF will be cutting), there are basically no reasonable options for Irish people to invest in equities. It’s bank accounts or property speculation only.
Across the water in the UK ordinary people can invest in tax-free ISAs, and there are much higher capital gains limits.
It’s past time we stopped with this childish idea that only the “rich” have money to invest – it’s a different Ireland now. And fuck you FG for not fixing this when you had Finance, you are supposed to be looking out for working people.
Would be viewed as a tax cut for the rich. Bizarrely.
I suppose they hope to cut the capitals gain tax and tell people who have 200 euro on bitcoin that it’s for them.
Meanwhile the fellas with 200 million on coca cola and shell will reap the rewards
“Deemed disposal was introduced in 2006, the reasoning being that Revenue didn’t want to wait decades to get its share of investment profiits”
Remember it isn’t your money. It’s the Revenue’s money, they just haven’t worked out how to get it off you yet!
As a country we over regulate and over tax many things. But this is one item that stands above them all.
The electorate in this country doesn’t invest their money, I’ve read a crazy statistic about how we rank vs peer nations for household equity holdings.
Surely the government see the obvious issues associated with the whole country sitting in straight cash
Buy a fucking house like everybody else.
200% return after 10 years… That’s the IRISH way.!
And for the 15yo’s. /S
We have to keep driving change that takes investment away from property. I’d actually regard that as a crucial social stability measure. If ETF as outlined does that then by all means.
Hence the only way to invest money in this country is being a landlord which is extremely damaging. Wouldn’t it be great if we legalized weed and invested the taxes and didn’t discourage investing through taxes.
about God damn time, ireland has the worst tax treatment of individual investors.
To those who can’t afford a home: This offers a very minor benefit.
To those who will never need to worry about a home, and are more-concerned with passing on inter-generational wealth: This is extremely important to them.
To those who invest in property: *Laughs in landlord* – nothing will be as profitable as a manipulated property market. Not even if the state massively subsidizes investments.
I think the government finally realised that even _they_ lose out from deemed disposal.
