Forests now cover 11.6% of Irish land, new figures show

  1. Only 1% is native woodland. Ireland has atrocious biodiversity and the government, coilte and opw seem to be actively working against helping.

  2. Don’t wanna bring negativity to this but I wonder how much of that is mature woodlands. You drive down in Wicklow you see acres of 5ft spruce trees but are still most likely added up to the total. Proper mature woodlands is probably like half of the total I would guess if even that

  3. As people pointed out it’s mostly the shite kind of forest. Imagine if the green freaks stopped yapping about stupid cycle lanes and taxing (poor) people into the ground via carbon taxes, but instead pushed for a few billion to be spent to buy a tens/hundred of thousands of acres and plant it in native trees?

  4. To meet the European average, Ireland would need about 4x the amount of forest it has now. ( about 38,000 km² on an 84,000 km² island )

Doesn’t sound like a bad idea to be honest.
