Hi guys,
we are planning to travel through Norway from Oslo to Narvik and than to Abisko and down to Stockholm at the end of March.
We (3 people) will be traveling by car (Range Rover) from Czechia.
We’ve got the road roughly planned like this:

Do you have any recommendations, tips and warnings? From what we’ve found it should be doable even with snow still present (idk?).

I will probably be posting this on r/Sweden to get opinions on their part.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Will be getting through everything on the weekend and incorporating a lot of your ideas in to the plan.
At this time it looks like we will be taking the Fv17 along the cost.

  1. My only input is you’ll be driving the most boring route in Norway from Oslo up to about Trondheim. No fjords or great views, just trees.
Never driven the route north of Trondheim so no input there unfortunately.

How long are you staying for? If I were you I’d detour through Sogndal and up to Atlanterhavsveien if you have time.
Some great sights off the top of my head: Geiranger, Loen, Åndalsnes..
Pretty coastal cities: Ålesund and Kristiansund (check out the island Grip!)
Drive up to Trondheim from there and swing by Helgelandskysten on the way north.

  2. You’re going to see a lot of trees, and you’re missing out on a lot of the spectacular scenery.

On the Oslo to Trondheim stretch make sure you stop in Røros. It’s very pretty. Also the road via Engerdal and Drevsjø is much more interesting than the road via Rena and Koppang.

Make sure you have good winter tyres.

  3. Hei friends. Well that looks like a roadtrip. How much time have you planned for this? It seems this route alone is 8 days of driving 8 hours a day.

Why did you pick this route? What is your goal? If you want to “see Norway”, then you picked the most boring tour possible. Do you have some detours planned each other day?

The E6 up to Narvik is mildy boring. It’s a 2-way “motorway” up to Trondheim and after that, it’s a 1-lane road up to Narvik with trees on both sides. Yes sometimes you can see a mountain or maybe the sea, but that’s it. Nothing too amazing, except maybe Stetinden. And when the landscape gets interesting above Bodo, you leave and go to Sweden. I mean, you can use street view to check how the route looks.

If you intend so see something interesting in Norway, I would recommend you drive west. From Oslo to Stavanger, to Bergen, to Alesund and then Trondheim. Maybe take a detour and drive along Sognefjord (biggest fjord) or any of the smaller ones. Further up there is the Atlantic Ocean Road, look it up.

I have only done the tour through Sweden once, some years ago. But it is just flat with trees on both sides. If you enjoy that, go for it. But I’d suggest maybe don’t drive so far and see something interesting instead.

As for the weather, March is still winter, especially above Trondheim. We have 1°c here and it’s -3°c in Narvik. March is funny, it can be a sunny day with 15°c or a snowstorm with -5°c. Prepare for everything.
