I also had an adopted dog (a malinois pup), I did have my work with her fear problems in the beginning (she was abused) but once that was cleared she was a magnificent dog!
I’ll also never forget the looks on the faces on the guys at the dogschool when they asked me if she had a “stamboom” and I told them she came from a shelter.
We always adopt, except for one time. One of the latest additions to our cat family is a stray cat that was hanging around our garden quite a lot. He seemed to be used to people, but was underfed and not castrated. Took us months to gain his trust, but finally we were able to get him to the vet and have him castrated, neutered and chipped. He’s living the dream now and is so grateful that we took him into our house!
The funniest part of the story is that as soon as he was officially “adopted” by us, another stray cat turned up in our garden! We’ve been feeding that cat for almost 6 months now and we hope to be able to get him to the vet and into our house before it starts to get really cold outside…
Edit: typo
Congrats! Where did you adopt and how did you find him/her?
I’m starting to look into adopting as well but find that almost all of these dogs have had biting incidents and issues with young kids. As a first time dog owner, I was discouraged to adopt a dog with issues like this as I don’t have enough knowledge to handle this.
Ok sure, but my friend can’t adopt a cat cause she lives in an apartment and I can’t adopt because I have a child and another cat. Friends who’ve adopted 3 times from an asiel in the past now can’t adopt because they have kids younger than 16.
Every year it gets harder and harder to adopt from shelters, they have you fill in pages and pages of info, ask you to explain how you will handle it if it turns out your pet later on has a terminal ilness (??) ask you to visit your home etc, the ones who cried out at the beginning of the summer that they could no longer handle the cats and dogs coming out are the same ones who denied people at the beginning of the year.
I’m on the waiting list to buy a dog from an official breeder now cause I have afford the price and I do a lot of research but I won’t look down on people who buy from ‘woefkesranch’ or other stores as they look like a normal business, even advertise on regional channels and have ‘infomercials’ on landbouwtv etc.
Ik kijk vaak op de adoptie website maar ik zie er nooit rassen staan die ik met mijn kinderen in huis zou willen halen. En als je dan de achtergrondverhalen leest. Pfft ik vind het moeilijk om een dier in huis te halen..
A true beauty <3
Good on you, congrats!
I get people, especially with small kids, who fear taking care of a traumatized shelter dog. But the whole breeding scene is seriously effed up, and most dogs will not be aggressive if you know how to handle them.
And also… it feels a bit icky that the first question anyone ever asks about our stray dog is about her race. I know it’s meant well, and we just answer “een betteke vanalles” or “een zinneke”, but why are we so obsessed with race purity in dogs?
Kan niet wachten tot onze renovaties klaar zijn en mijn vriendin & ik een Bobby’tje kunnen adopteren… 😀 Ziet er een schatje uit btw! 😀
We adopted 3 cats before our daughter was born, since we have her, no asiel would give us an animal because she is too small, apparently.
Congrats!
We always adopted or got one from a shelter.
Since 1 September I’m the proud baasje of a pup who started the training to be a guidance dog for the blind, but was, after 10 months, let’s say, ‘disqualified’ for being to energetic. Out of a nest of 5 puppy’s, 4 of them were no longer able to continue their training. Sadly, this happens a lot.
The organization and the foster family (the ones who take them in at a very young age and teach them the basic commands) put a lot of effort and money (and emotions, because they know the family has to let it go after 10 months) in to make it succeed. But after 10/11 months, they have to evaluate, because that’s when the real training starts. And only the best of the best can continue. Watch ‘[Pick of the litter](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oW7GVR2c80k)’ if you can (the full docu can be found sailing the high seas).
The organization is called [Vrienden der Blinden](https://www.vriendenderblinden.be/) and they do amazing work. You can always shoot them a mail so they can put you on a list. They won’t just accept anyone though, you will be screened, have to give regular updates once you take him/her in and since the trainers know what they’re doing, they can easily tell if you’re fit for an adoption. And after 1 month you can get a green light.
Because we adopted a retired service dog (of 8 years) 3 years ago, they already knew who we were and reached out to me.
They deserve more attention :).
Our chihuahua died recently and we would really like to find another smsll dog (puppy). Most breeders require an account for a future litter, but I would like to see and choose a dog before paying anything.
The dog needs to be less than 8kg adult because we take the dog with us when we travel by plane.
Sure, adoption is nice when they don’t give you a cat in a bag. We are very quiet, very calm people who just sit silently at our computers all day. We wanted a lazy cat like our friend has, we house her cat for many weeks while my friend travels. The cat just sits around all day and comes to cuddle when she feels like it. We went to an asiel and asked them for the laziest cat they have. They give us a cat, and say here, this one doesn’t move at all, ever, laziest cat ever. So we take her home, and after 3 weeks when she stopped being deathly afraid of us, she turned out to be the most hyperactive, the most loud and rambunctious cat I’ve ever met in my life, and I’ve met/had many cats before… She runs around like crazy (in our 50 square meter apartment, where there’s absolutely no space for her to run, so she bonks into walls at full speed), she loudly yowls for 30 minutes straight most nights of the week, she won’t tolerate closed doors (goes up to any closed door, gets up on back paws and scratches fast with her 2 front paws, for 20 minutes at a time), so all the doors in the house HAVE TO stay open at all times.
She has energy bursting out of her ass, that is completely unspent because she lives in a tiny tiny apartment. And the worst part, she absolutely refuses to be picked up or come cuddle with us. For 3 years we’ve been trying to get her to stop scratching doors and furniture, but to no awail… We bought her a 400 euro exercise wheel like bengal cats get, so she could run and let loose, but she’s a huge pussy and too scared to use it, no amount of toys or treats will get her to step on the scary wheel.. She absolutely cannot go outside, because she’s extremely scared of everything and her own shadow, and at the same time she’s energetic like 1000 energizer bunnies… I’ve asked my partner to contact the asiel and explain the situation to them, that they totally misrepresented this cat, and she’s stuck in the wrong living arrangements for her, but he won’t hear it. So now i’m stuck for the next 15 to 20 years with a cat i dislike, that is a very loud, high-strung, scared and wired-up ball of anxious energy
Until it rips your baby’s face off. Maybe when the kid(s) is/are grown up.
Congratulations! I wish you and yours all the best with this new addition to the family!
Craving for a dog as well, but waiting untill our situation is suitable enough…
As a native English speaker learning Dutch, broodfokkers looks like it should mean bread fuckers. I am sure that is wrong.
ADOPT DON’T SHOP , YAS QUEEN
If you want a dogor cat always go tothe shelters first and try to adopt one of their animals , it’s always the best thing to do . And the animals too will be gratefull .
I love it when people ask about my shelter dog’s race: “I don’t know, this cute doggie was found by the police in the woods. He’s a one of a kind zinneke, you can’t get that from a broodfokker, huh?!”
I’ve looked around multiple times over the years but in Belgium adopting isn’t that attractive. Unreliable history with kids, full time job to retrain, doesn’t like other dogs, … But it’s also good since that means that most dogs do get good families in their life.
95% of the dogs up for adoption are like if we would outsource our senile racist grandparents to charity people instead of paying for a retirement home.
