A small state threatening Germany – how Nazi propaganda justified the need to occupy Czechoslovakia before World War II.

  1. Of course this is bullshit propaganda. However, the Wehrmacht’s leadership was genuinely afraid of Czechoslovakia.

The assumption was that a war against Czechoslovakia would also include France. The czechoslovak army and air force were deemed to be very capable, and well-supplied. Add to that the fact that they occupied a very defensible position.

Which is why there were plans to overthrow Hitler over his plans for annexation. France and Britain folding at Munich was what put a stop to those plans. The generals involved believed that Hitler was too popular to overthrow after that.

  2. I can’t believe this! Better give all the built up defenses in case of German attack to Nazi Germany

    That’ll guarantee the peace

  3. From the 1937 play The White Sickness by renowned Czech writer and playwright Karel Čapek:

The curtain rises. The Marshal’s office. On the open balcony, the Marshal speaks to the crowds. Inside the Marshal’s study, the Marshal’s Daughter and Young Baron Krüg in military uniform.

THE MARSHAL (to the crowds): at this moment, when our silver planes are already wreaking havoc over the cities of our insidious enemies (Enthusiastic shouting.) I want to answer to my nation for my most difficult step. (Long live the Marshal! Hail to the Marshal!) Yes, I have begun the war, and I have begun it without warning. I have done so to spare the lives of thousands of your children, who are at this moment winning their first battle, before the enemy can recover from his dismay.

I now ask your additional consent (Frenetic shouting: Yes! Yes! We consent! Long live the marshal!) Further, I have raised the fight without further humiliation with that little, miserable state which thought it could provoke and insult our great nation with impunity-(Indignant shouting of the crowds. ) and to subvert its order and security by their paid bandits. (Roar of the crowds: Kill them! On them! Traitors! Hang them!)

Silence! Shouting will not get rid of this evil! There was only one way: to destroy by punitive expedition that troublesome little state which had consistently threatened our peace; to destroy that small and inferior nation which had not even the right to live; to destroy it, whoever protected it,-and now let the other powers show their cards! I only say that we fear no one! (We are not afraid! Long live the Marshal! Long live the war!)

I knew you were behind me. For your honor, I sent my magnificent army into battle. I declare the same for you to the eyes of the whole world: We did not want this war, but we will win it! We will win it by the will of God – We will win it (beating his breast) because we are in the right!… We are in the right… (Fainter:) We… are in the right… (Great shout: We are in the right! Glory to the war! Glory to the marshal!)

  4. Just to be pedantic, a more accurate translation would be “A small state *is* threatening Germany”. Small difference, but given the context I think an important one
