Over here in the UK, supermarkets are rationing some vegetables saying that with unseasonable weather in Spain and high electricity prices, the greenhouses are being left cold and therefore certain types of vegetables are rationed. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-64718823
Naturally the Brexiteers are saying “It’s nothing to do with Brexit”
So what is the situation in Ireland? Are veggies in short supply? Or is it another Brexit benefit?

I’ve loads of veggies… no idea about anyone else but I’m all set.
Twice this week I haven’t been able to find cherry tomatoes but had no other problems.
There was a segment on the news today about a wholesaler in Dublin who is struggling to source some veg from Spain and experiencing some big price hikes in the past few days. Haven’t noticed the effects yet but we’ll most likely see in a few days.
They were discussing it on the radio this morning. Spanish and Dutch greenhouses are way behind schedule because of high energy prices. Shortages of everything according to the man from the veg buyers association.
Peppers and tomatoes have been short the last week, yeah. I had to eat weird foreign dishes like ham with carrots and turnips.
I’ve noticed Tomatoes and peppers are starting to get in real demand.
Due to kids and work, I normally end up doing the shopping at 8pm some evening, fruit and veg shelves are completely bare always, pre covid there wasn’t that problem
I haven’t noticed any shortages and I buy mostly veg.
I haven’t noticed any shortages
Nope, none so far, finding it hilarious that Britain is still not blaming brexit. It’s Brexit. We may well feel shortages soon but you can be sure the EU will fair better than Britain.
Not exactly. Went to 4 supermarkets last week to find no cauliflower, cucumber, or tomatoes. No explanation as to why.
Thanks to all who are writing in to help me understand what’s happening. For those interested, yes Brexit is as bad as you think it is.
What I do with my vegetables is none of the Brits concern!
Not noticed anything missing.
Yes, my local Lidl (in Drumcondra) was out of peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers on Sunday. Not that it bothers me because I’m originally from a country where fresh vegetables cost a fortune out of season. I will just switch from my usual cucumber + tomato + sweet pepper salad to coleslaw since cabbages and carrots are still readily available.
I’ve been rationing them since I first put one on my palate.
Have a look at this Twitter thread – it explains quite clearly why this is all brexit related.

We don’t ration vegetables in Ireland we elect them into office.
I have no vegetables to ration….
This happens every year – not sure why it’s getting so much coverage this time around.
Oh how the tables have turned. 🥔
Its Brexit and also the failure to support Brittish Farms to grow at home, food security will be a huge problem in Britain for the next years
No but we’re part of the EU
I live in Sweden and there’s no problem with availability. Price on the other hand….. fuckin hell
My local LIDL has a sign up saying bell peppers are in short supply.
Could that be Brexit related? Possibly I’m sure lots of stuff comes though the UK.
Could it be cold weather/high electric prices in Spain? Possibly.
Nope we are the most food secure country who participate in an open market
Grim. Haven’t noticed anything missing from the shelves here no. It’s not unusual to have to look around for fresh stuff when it’s out of season though.
None at all
It’s because of the cold weather in Spain, Morocco, and Egypt. Salad vegetables like peppers, rockets, tomatoes are all very limited. All berries are very limited as well. Your best bet is to go the shop early as you possibly can.
The brits are eyeing up our potatoes again
No? No rationing or shortage that I’ve seen at all
Like others, no peppers available. Noticed it last week doing an online shop but didn’t think too much of it. Tried to do an online shop yesterday and still none available, forgot to finish it so went into Tesco today and they had about 6 bags of triple pack peppers and this was early in the day
I grow them and will be happy to sell them to you at an extortionate rate.
I’ve been following the story in the UK. Here in Ireland I’ve had no problems buying any fruit or veg.
