As an example, we often hear about opioid abuse, but the fact is that some people live with chronic pain, day in, day out. If they could (some of them at least) live with a cannabis spray or drops etc, and no longer need the opioids, how dare they be denied this.

I have a prescription for cannabis in the UK, and the current system is not fit for purpose. Too many gaps in service, cowboy actors, and issues with contamination in the supply chain. This medicine makes a massive difference in how I can manage my disabilities. We need to widen access, not maintain a broken system that only benefits those businesses with the connections to get their foot in the door.

Just going to post this as a main comment as it was my reponse to someone but I think it’s a pertinent point. There is a broad misconception that it actively benefits the Conservatives financially to keep weed illegal. British Sugar grows cannabis for export and also for use by GW Pharmaceuticals, who produce the cannabis-derived products used to treat epilepsy (Sativex, a nasal spray). Former Drugs minister Victoria Atkins did step down from her post due to conflict of interest as her husband is a higher-up with British Sugar. Also, Theresa May’s husband Philip May, is a higher-up with Capital Group, an investment firm that has a large share of GW Pharmaceuticals. Those are the main financial relationships at play.
Often people interpret this as meaning that the Tories financially benefit by weed being illegal. But that’s not true for a few reasons – firstly, they would stand to make a lot more money if cannabis was legal, as British Sugar would be uniquely well-placed to start producing recreational cannabis and selling to that market. Secondly, what GW Pharmaceuticals makes is not a recreational product – it’s a nasal spray with no potential to give someone a high. GWP does not stand to make less money if weed was legal – if anything they would stand to make more money, either through reduced production costs, or being able to enter the CBD oil market relatively easily.
Whichever way you slice it, the fact remains that legalized weed stands to make Tories more money, not less.
