Doesn’t matter, we won’t get shit. The Fed have been asking for years for a significant pay raise to no avail.
Same as the military.
I think them and us are the only two professions bound by law as being unable to strike.
Prison Service can go on strike actually, prisoners are just kept in cell for the whole day.
The police in the UK used to have the support and approval of the general public and a certain status in society. This meant that they were looked after when it came to things like making sure they got paid properly. These days, not so much. Case in point, I recently overheard two young women chatting in a coffee shop. Apparently one had just dumped their recently acquired boyfriend on finding out that he was in the police. I think this decline in how the police are perceived started quite a while ago, around the time of the [battle of Orgreave](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Orgreave).
It’s already under threat. In most of the country you can’t really count on the police to solve ‘minor’ crimes like theft and robbery anymore.
If they buck up their recruitment and operational standards, and deal with the corruption throughout the force maybe the public would support a pay increase for the Police alongside the other striking groups; until then, they can keep jogging on.
[e] Downvoted, hardly surprising lol; the truth can be hard to hear. The simple fact is, the current funding level of the forces has very little if anything to do with who they choose to recruit, or the processes in place for dealing with internal corruption – these are entirely down to decisions made by the management tiers and above.
Its absolutely true, but their not going to do anything. Their the reason its in this sorry state to begin with all their cuts.
We’ve lost over 20,000 police officers, we’re on track to lose nearly 10,000 more by the end of the decade. In many areas the police can’t even patrol anymore, and if your hoping for quick response to anything that doesn’t carry a risk to life you can forget it.
The system’s buckling and we have a government that’s trying to solve it by giving them less support.
“How am I meant to abuse women on such a small salary?”
In the UK, a police officer starts on an annual salary of £21,600 or so.
There are then annual increases in salary for 7 years, rising to just over £41,000. These pay rises are heavily weighted towards the last few years, with £11,000 worth of salary locked behind years 5 and 6.
For less than £22,00, a police officer is expected to do unsocial shift work, forced overtime, and have their shift times changed at a moment’s notice. They are expected to deal with the worst members of society on a daily basis. They are expected to deal with traumatic incidents, such as suicides, murdered children, horrific car accidents, and other stuff, almost weekly. They are expected to shoulder a ridiculous amount of professional risk in how they support victims of violent, domestic, or sexual crime. They are expected to fight people, who often are carrying weapons, risk serious personal injury in the process.
They are expected to do all of that, for under £22k.
Pay police more, and you will attract better talent, who feel the money is worth their skills. Pay police more, and existing officers will be less tempted by corrupting influences, because they can actually afford to feed their kids and heat their home.
As with all public services, put more money into it, and you will get much more out of it.
I read somewhere that the actual starting salary has barely risen by a few hundred pounds over the last 10 years for the Police.
I know somone who left a job serving at McDonald’s to join the police taking a pay cut.
No discredit to anyone working at McDonald’s, but they really need to hike this considerably to attract the right talent.
Imagine being a police officer and addressing someone in the wrong pro-noun or something and getting disciplinary.
Police in other countries are respected because if you give them any crap they slap the shit out of you.
Law and order remains.
Now they’re just whimps and the youths of today have no respect for them.
