Human Rights Act: UK government unveils reform proposals

  1. ‘The government has launched what it says will be “common sense” reforms to the Human Rights Act that will “restore confidence” in the legal system.
The proposals commit to staying within the European Convention on Human Rights, despite pressure from some Conservatives to leave the treaty.’

  2. >That review and its conclusions, advice and warnings run to an astonishing 580 pages.

That just means that Raab hasn’t read it

  3. Another U-Turn by the government? So they’re not scrapping or altering the Human Rights Act but want it interpreted by the UK supreme court to go against any immigrant trying to gain asylum.

  4. >The proposals commit to staying within the European Convention on Human Rights

Which does mean no death penalty, at least.

  5. Has anyone actually read the Human Rights Act? It’s toothless. If a court finds a law conflicts with the act, they can issue a Declaration of Incompatibility, but it doesn’t invalidate the law and the government are under no obligations to change anything. Why do the Conservatives care?
