People in your 30s and younger, What do you believe Ireland was like in 1983?

  1. From what I’ve seen they believe that everyone walked around with millions in their pockets and we were one of the richest countries in the world

  2. a simpler time where community really meant community.. maybe there was nowhere near the money to enjoy the materialistic possessions of later generations but people made their own craic from who they were and formed a fascinating culture and legacy that the 80’s has forever cast upon our sacred island

  3. Judging by what my parents say “No arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.”

  4. da giving you three euro to buy a cola and some snackswhile hes getting sloshed at the pub and knicking yer friend tommy´s fathers fags

  5. I can imagine it being a difficult time based on Reeling in the Years. For all of pop cultures throwbacks to the Miami vice-synthwave nostalgia goggles of the 80’s, I just picture a country that tries to get by while no signs of peace happens in the north. At least the tunes would be great and The Terminator would be released the following year.

  6. I would imagine the 80s in Ireland were like the 60s in most other Western nations. We had the 80s in the 90s and by the early 2000s we had caught up.

  7. Lads headed to England to blow up Harrods, load of ones escaped from The Maze Prison, the New Ireland forum was established, and nobody thought it was fine that Sinn Fein was essentially the mouthpiece of a paramilitary group or that it hilarious that Gerry Adams was lying about his IRA membership.

  8. hell.

I would hate it. Couldn’t be able to express myself, nor be able to love another man, or to talk ill words about the Church. I would hate it. the only good thing would be the music and maybe the cheaper houses. But a person socially awkard as me with niche interests would not end up being happy and, I dont know how homophobic things would be back then
