Good Move: 20% drop in car traffic in Brussels city centre

  1. This reminds of the story of Maggie de Block who closed the immigration centers and vented the fact that she reduced the spendings…while technically not wrong, it is self-evident that a closed center won’t cost you anything.

If you close a street, there will be no more cars? 😬

  2. >The figures also counter an oft-touted argument that the new circulation plan is pushing car traffic to the already saturated Small Ring Road, creating a traffic jam in and around all of Brussels.
However, figures from GPS providers show that in January 2023, it took exactly 60 minutes to drive around the entire Small Ring Road during peak rush hour – five minutes faster than before Covid-19, and barely slower than in spring 2021.

    Not in my experience …

  3. It’s so great, all people who live in Lakensestraat or near the bourse do now have to take Jacqmainlaan to get to their destination. As a consequence the Jacqmainlaan is always constipated with cars that are just driving through.
And now they’re removing more than half of the street parking places in that area. It’s a win for the owners of a private garage, their property value will go brrrrrr

  4. Good news!

In years to come people will be aghast at the fact that it was considered normal to drive around cities polluting the air with no consideration for people’s health.

Air pollution kills thousands of people every year. It’s a preventable problem.

Belgium needs to change its tax legislation and stop encouraging company cars.
People should be given tax breaks for not buying cars. It’s just ridiculous to see the number of cars entering Brussels every morning with just one person. It’s wholly unsustainable.

  5. I mainly think the shittery that is going on on the keizer karellaan coming from the e40 is beyond idiotic. No reason to get everybody from a 2 lane to a 1 lane for 50m back to a 2 lane in the tunnels.

It’s just harassing the flemish coming from the e40, i suspect.
