As a brit who has been in Australia for 10 years.. it’s all about the East Coast. The West Coast is shit, this is why they need to attract people. There’s a reason there’s 30,000 job vacancies.
Perth property is cheaper because there’s lack of demand there, not because you’re grabbing a bargain that nobody else has spotted. Perth was popular a few years back due to the mining boom, this isn’t the case anymore. House prices dropped, people left, now there’s job vacancies and they’re trying to convince UK people to go there. Outside of Perth you’re essentially in the middle of nowhere.
They’ll try and convince you by comparing salary with UK salary, it’ll sound good, but you’ll find equally high wages in Sydney and Melbourne.
Average full time wage in Sydney is currently $90k (about £51k)
So anybody thinking of coming.. i recommend you check out all the options, and I’m pretty sure you’ll choose the East . (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast etc)
You couldn’t pay me enough to move there. It’s too hot. The reason they’re struggling for people is because it’s desolate af with absurdly hot weather. Britain is going to shit but at least we have a safe climate and don’t have to worry about poisonous creatures and droughts constantly.
Plus, the article mentions that the man was confused when a car stopped for him and signalled for him to walk across the street. That happens to me all the time in Bristol.
Australian here.
Australia is a very tempting place, but there are also serious downsides to living in Australia. The biggest being the fact that we are isolated from almost everything. We literally live in our own world.
Secondly, because we are isolated, we don’t have many skilled industries. We lost most of our industries because of mining. Our education system is targeted at being a McUni of paying Chinese students.
If you have a trade skill, Australia is great. Every Australian wants to be a plumber or sparkie, because its big money. If you are in a white collar industry, like an engineer or a scientist, think about it very carefully.
You’ll fry anywhere away from the tiny tip of land well south of Perth. Perth itself and anywhere north or east of it is hot, hot, hot. Beware.
Have rellos in both Geraldton WA and Manchester UK – it’s a tossup which has a worse climate.
Be careful, all the good bits are taken. If something seems too good to be true it’s a mirage.
Moved to Melbourne before Covid. I’m pretty well travelled and it was the best place in the world. Fell in love with the place in a matter of days, but unfortunately had to come home as Covid fucked up my next visa application.
Meanwhile, my mate moved to Perth a couple of years earlier and by the time I arrived he had pretty much lost his mind, was planning a move to Melbs and had it delayed for over a year due to Covid. He’s living in Victoria now and seems to be in a way better place mentally.
