The tomato section of a supermarket in the United Kingdom, which recently liberated itself from the European Union

  1. Yup, just popped to the local tesco, and fuck all. There’s so much stuff that’s constantly missing right now, it’s so utterly stupid

  2. Cringe.

    >“Last autumn, there were numerous conversations within the industry about the rising costs of production with higher energy prices and input costs. Growers took the view here in the UK and other parts of northern Europe that unless they could be guaranteed a reasonable return, they wouldn’t plant the crops

Unsurprisingly it’s fucking expensive to grow tomatoes in glasshouses during an energy shock

  3. Boring. ……..This is about the sixth post and it’s not representative anyway. There were pictures of 10 euro peppers in Finland yesterday. Try and do better.

  4. I’m not surprised some European stores are well stocked with some of their prices.

I done my weekly shop in Aldi this afternoon and they had no missing fresh produce. Asda was low on peppers but I haven’t noticed much else thankfully. Its most definitely not like trying to buy hand soap in March 2020.

  5. Why are we just choosing to ignore the lack of tomatoes in Irish supermarkets? Why are we pretending that the UK is the only country affected by this?

    Very strange behaviour.

  6. To be fair, this is the first time I’ve seen this and it’s been three years since brexit. Also, I’m in London and haven’t seen any issues with food.

  7. U.K. supermarkets pay £x per item, which when the price goes above they don’t buy it. That means the U.K. has the same price all year round, and occasional shortages.

The EU nations generally pay spot prices for veg so no matter the cost they can stock shelves, but the prices fluctuate in line.

Both ways have pros and cons. However put the cost up 10% and it might as well be an empty shelf as it wouldn’t be going in my basket anyway

  8. This lasted about a week and applied to Ireland too, this sub has such a hateboner for the UK. I get it, Brexit, but ffs have a day off with the propaganda, this has nothing to do with EU membership. Hot on the tails of the “Poland will be richer than the UK in seven years” posts too. Jesus wept.

  9. You’re jealous because they got their cuntry back. They’re in control. They made Britain great again.

  10. If this was Brexit the media would be losing their shit right now with 50 articles a day on how doomed the UK is but no the media mentioned it but hardly covered it because it’s not Brexit but nice try OP.

  11. That’s a lot of copium in the comments.

Look, one issue is a fluke, a series of systematic failures including food, labor shortages, NHS shortages, energy, corruption,….. UK is not the only one, but leaving EU magnifies all of these

Nowhere is ideal, but you can tell when a neo-liberal government is running it’s country into ground

  12. It’s fun to be a little smug, but I really do wish the English would change their minds and embrace the union. Sure, we can live without each other, but we’d be stronger together.

  13. Oh no what a catastrophe! The tomatoes are gone in February in a part of the world where you can hardly get edible tomatoes during peak tomato season!

  14. Even I as a French person am starting to get annoyed by all the UK bashing and UK bashing is essentially a tradition for us.

  15. Meanwhile, supermarkets in Kherson got loads of fresh produce. A city on the frontlines of a large conventional war, constantly under bombardment, has a better supply situation that the UK.

Brexit will never cease to amaze me.

  16. Honestly I’d rather wait a couple of weeks for tomatoes than be price gouged for them.

Of course ideally neither would happen.

  17. I live about 3 miles away from a multiple hectare industrial hydroponic greenhouse… farm(?) that grows tomatoes and cucumbers etc and Zimbabwean cucumbers or Spanish tomatoes were always cheaper in the local supermarket.

This has less to do with legit scarcity and more to do with how our economic system works. (Waves vaguely in the direction of energy companies making gargantuan profits)
