My relative’s naturalization record has her listed as immigrating from “Friedman, Czechoslovakia”. I’ve searched to no avail for the location of this alleged village. I’m assuming it was a translation error upon arriving in NYC. Her husband was listed from “Zamek, Czechoslovakia” (now Poland). Curious if anyone has any leads!
Only thing that comes to mind is Frýdek-Místek in Czechia, close to the Polish border , near Ostrava
Another option is a village called Fridman, since 1945 part od Poland now called Frydman.
Similar pronouncation and I can see americans writting down what they hear
She was probably from Frydman and her husband might have been from Niedzica. Zamek means “castle” in Polish. The neighborhood of Niedzica where the Niedzica castle is located is called Zamek. Both Frydman and Niedzica belonged to Slovakia between 1939-45 (not Czechoslovakia) and were inhabitated by ethnic Slovaks.
One of the few villages in Tatras that were given to Poland for some reason. Someone sure knows said reason but I’m not sure.
