2. Putins fear was always that the Ukraine became a successful country, this would peove that failure to improve life for the majority of Russians was Putins.

   Even today, when he says the West threatens or will destroy Russia, what he means is that the West threatens his grip on power, and he is willing to destroy everything to stop that.
