Number of ukrainian refugees displaced in Europe in February 2023

  1. To be fair, we’ve taken in a large amount compared to other Western states for our size. And I say that as someone who’s proud we’ve taken so many in.

  2. Fairly obvious the EU temporary protection directive isn’t working as intended. Some states have taken on far too much of the burden and others are seemingly ignoring their obligation.

  3. Is it not a language thing. Any that learn an European language in school or college will probably learn German English or Spanish. Making us an obvious place to go.

  4. That’s actually very dispersed and the ones that have more than the rest like the ones bordering it make total sense

The richer countries in Europe having that many also makes sense compared to the poorer ones that are closer

I just wish that we had the ability to not force them into cramped conditions but I’d say most countries are the same

  5. Amazing how we are crippling our refugee system when Norway, Sweden and Denmark haven’t even taken as many as we have on even an absolute basis. Never mind per capita.

Guess most of that is down to Michael Martin saying they would be no limits to how many we could take, so of course that would be tested.

Good for him he got brownie points with the EU he can cash in when he moves on from Irish politics. But not so good for the refugees left to sleep on the streets due to lack of accommodation.

  6. You know it may cause tension with housing but we should be proud we gave shelter to a nation when they are having their worst moment. At the end of the day it’s protecting innocent people

  7. No consistency, Croatia and Slovakia are closest to Ireland in population but fractions of our numbers, we have increased our population by 1.5%.
Denmark, Sweden. Norway much bigger populations but again smaller numbers. France 0.18% & Germany 0.13% population increase in comparison. Big countries taking in numbers but compartive to population no where near our numbers

Not all one way, many other countries have taken in much higher numbers than Ireland relative to their populations.

Would love to see us take in as many as we can, but we shouldn’t be taking in asylum seekers and putting them on the streets, if we cant house people its inhumane to bring them here when other countries can offer them a much better life.

  8. Poland gives €150 a month for three months versus Ireland (full dole no time limit, accommodation and free hotel meals until recently).

That map is ridiculously stupid and in no way describes Ireland’s contribution to Ukranian refugees.

  9. That’s really interesting (and sad) to see. Imagine your nation’s people fleeing war, all split up all over Europe.

Thats a large number in Moldova, for a small, poor country.

I wonder if the issue with the Scandinavian countries is the language barrier.

  10. It’s shocking how few refuges are in being sheltered in France and Hungary! They need to get their acts together.

  11. Why was the government let take in more then half of Frances total? Surely it was clear to see we don’t have the accommodation that France would have had?

  12. I wish we had the infrastructure to give them something better without making it more difficult for our own youth to buy their own homes. To me that’s a part of being a part of the EU. We can’t just take it all and no give. Doesn’t and shouldn’t work that way.

  13. So in the past year, a population the size of Galway just suddenly appeared without any major projects to house them.

    Great.
