“There were practically no food banks under Labour. People should be thanking us for them opening.” – a Tory, probably
Lee Anderson legit believes food banks are opened by “do-gooders”.
Well, yeah.
I volunteer in my local foodbank and it’s really bad. On any given week we’re handing out 200 food parcels, and that isn’t just a single bag of food, it’s a mix of singles (two bags), couples (three bags) or families (four bags).
Capitalism in its current form is a failed system. Nobody should have to rely on food banks.
I hate how Britain has a large charity sector combined with a massive class issue and wealth divide.
The king shouldn’t encourage the poor man to divide his piece of bread in to two and share it while the king feasts on a hog he raised on inclosed lands stolen from the masses.
I really do wonder how these food banks got so big, prolific, organised and well-known. Yes, my tin foil hat is firmly in place on my head.
It would be horrific to think, but I do wonder what the political outcome of foodbanks going on strike for a month would be.
The Tory party have not been raked over hot coals over the introduction of Universal Credit, the abolishment of the discretionary Social Fund, reduced local authority funding and austerity in general. Food bank usage directly correlated with post 2008 crash austerity. They are to blame
It’s a form of welfare that I think is more palatable to the upper middle classes of this country.
There was a lot of media awareness in the 2000s / 2010s about people who take benefit cash and spend it on drugs, cigarettes or Sky TV.
Food banks ensure that those in need – and the children of those in need – are actually getting food.
And if I started a “money bank” that gave away free money to anyone who walked through its doors, I bet you a lot of people would come to “depend” on that too…
Once a section of society realises that shopping can be just another thing for which they don’t have to pay, why would they ever look back?
I work for Morrisons and in our canteen we have a food bank especially for staff. To me, that’s so fucked up yet no one seems to notice or care.
Most of us have been there for years and are on full time contracts, we’re paid the living wage and skilled workers are paid more. We also get a 15% discount on our shopping, 70% off cafe food, and often get early access to the reductions.
On paper we should have it easier than most, yet me and my colleagues constantly struggle and the food bank rarely has enough to go round. Just such a sad state of affairs.
I’m glad voters are getting what they voted for.
A documentary I watched not too long ago had a man in a good bank queue and he voted for brexit and Tory. It’s hard to have sympathy these days. No doubt the same people will get drawn into the trans debate and vote Tory again…. Forgetting they themselves have no money for food or living
Food banks are a PR stunt in collaboration with governments & suppliers to look morally good.
People are obviously going to use them if they are giving away free food, it’s the uk way, blag everything.
All these social services to help the poor, but raising a wage is not an option?
Wouldn’t any number be a record number since food banks have only existed for a few years?
I love the tories, they’ve only increased my quality of life over the last 13years and I’ll happily vote for them again!
Said no one fucking ever.
I remember when trolleys for food banks were not a thing at the front of every supermarket and food donations might have just been a big thing around Harvest Festival or Christmas. Now they are everywhere and people do not question why. So many blindly donate without thinking that society should just not be this way, nor do they blame those who are responsible for living conditions being so poor these days. You even have people blaming those who use food banks, rather than the government and companies that have forced them to rely on charity. It’s a tragic state of affairs for one of the richest countries on the planet.
Doesn’t surprise me, the cost of food has gone up ridiculously fast.
What is it with the requirement of a voucher in order to use a food bank? During Covid I saw people, in several countries, having easy access to food banks without a gatekeeper qualifying need
