It is absolutely wild that the bands are still determined by house prices from 1991.
Oh great, more tax, aren’t we squeezed enough already.
Squeeze us because we’re ready to trap. Squeeze corporations making record profits? “Nooo please, they’ll leave us!” How about you make some legislation harshly penalising leaving corporations and trap them here too, then tax their profits dry.
What is Council Tax? A regressive tax brought in after the reintroduction of the Poll Tax, an even more regressive tax brought in last under feudalism when it caused riots, predictably caused riots and widespread non-payment again. Why is there no Council Tax in Northern Ireland? Because they didn’t dare.
What’s crazy is that the council tax bands top out at about 4k per year, for a property worth £320k and upwards in 1991.
There are no bands beyond that, so you’ve got people in a £1mil house and a £45mil house paying the same amount.
It’s also disproportionately weighted as a percentage of home value to the poorest in society.
Council Tax only makes up about 50% of local government income, with the rest from grants, fees and business rates.
Basically this year the councils have all had to increase to the maximum possible without holding a local referendum, or have gone ahead with referendums.
Its not always just a straight 5% on last year’s bill but a quite complex formula different for Adult Social care and the Greater London Authority.
