Because our government are a bunch of inept self serving criminals who have milked the system so hard it’s collapsing.
The UK have been alienating and isolating themselves from the innovations of the European Bloc for decades.
It’s grandiosity. 150 years ago they basically owned the world and are still struggling to concede that others may have things to offer.
Brexit and being run by a bunch of selfserving parasites who squeeze every penny away from the general population into their own pockets, and the completely wrong approach to solving the financial crisis of 2008, leading to increased inequality.
If the poorer parts of the population get more money, they spend it locally (and thus pay more tax & VAT) .
When rich people get more money they pay their accountant to avoid paying tax (prime example was Rishi Sunaks wife, remember her? )
And I will mention Brexit again, just because that was such a spectacular shit show.
Edit: changed problematic wording
Simple, because of tories, their lies and corruption dragging us out of EU which destroyed our economy.
Maybe because we don’t actually make anything to sell anymore? All our china, clothes, glass, steel etc seem to be closed down ..
What happened in the UK and didn’t happen in those countries?
Why, years of underinvestment, austerity and neglected followed my a massive act of national self-harm of course! Loooool
lads lads lads
Because the member for Doncaster North was ambushed with a bacon sandwich.
The high tech I work for can’t find the staff. After Brexit lots was moved to Portugal and Germany. Now they are looking to move the rest.
Brexit, and Tory government. Anything else we can help with?
It doesn’t help that people *still* think £30k is a good wage because it was years ago and we’ve had wage stagnation for like 15 years.
One of these is not like the other. Can you spot the country that left the regional trade block?
I was speaking to my friend yesterday, she just got her PhD in a STEM field and is leaving for Australia because her salary here is so low she’s struggling. Another friend is doing her PhD, same field, and can’t enter the UK because the visa process is so hard and expensive. Another is doing his PhD abroad in Canada because the grants in the UK were so bad. I did mine abroad under an EU grant for similar reasons. I’m now back but am looking at getting out. This shouldn’t be an issue.
Brexit brexit brexit.
We ship to the EU, DPD charge a £4.50 brexit surcharge for customs clearance, on lower value items it makes us completely uncompetitive.
Many small businesses have given up on EU sales because the cost of registering and compliance for IOSS isn’t worth it
Because trickle down economics and austerity doesn’t work.
Oh and corruption.
15 years of needless austerity and putting up trade barriers with our closest trading partners? Or foreigners and the woke leftie anti-growth coalition? Who knows. /s
Because we’re trying to drive the economy by taking all the money out of it. Weirdly that doesn’t work
Company Boards full of salespeople and accountants rather than PhD engineers. Chronic short-termism…
If you ask a German what he wants his son to be, he will answer “I want him to be a Director of Siemens”
If you ask an Englishman what he wants his son to be, he will answer “I want him to play football for England”
recently visited relatives in Germany and the groceries were between 1.2 and 2 times what I usually pay in the UK, after a few weeks my budget had run out and I was buying less. I’m sorry to say it but I felt glad to return home.
what was surprisingly cheaper was eating out, sometimes the difference between a simple restaurant meal and buying the ingredients were marginal. that and beer/wine, but I can’t live on beer or wine.
So many years of uncontested Tory leadership. Germany are about to legalise cannabis as well, their economy is going to rocket ahead of ours.
The nationalist cult that brought us Brexit which in turn brought us the dangerously incompetent and inept Tory government.
It’s not complicated or a hard question to answer.
Problem is half the country aren’t ready to face reality as they’re in the aforementioned cult.
Because a load of (b)ankers are in charge of decision making.
This is actually simple and BBC as usual is ignoring the elephant in the room.
We are service based economy and around that time government introduced changes to IR35 that prevent small business providing services to other businesses from running.
This caused project cancellations, brain drain, closure of thousands of businesses, outflow of investment and killed productivity.
The answer is just below the headline and begins with B.
Because the UK lost their biggest commercial/social partner, which was JUST around the corner
You’re getting the crony effect
I’ve seen it in small and mid sized southern us towns. The local big shots control.everything and choke the life out of any business that gets above a mom and pop shop
You have too many incompetent wealthy. They’re good at killing internal competition but not talented enough to deal with external.competition
So now they farm profits from squeezing the locals as hard as possible
One word – Tories. I’d like to say most people in the UK are aware and annoyed by the Tory party and their crap of 13 years of running this country further and further into the ground. But sadly, too many people keep voting for them, voting for their crap like Brexit and are stupid enough to believe that Tories are good because every now and then (especially around election time) they throw a dog a bone. This country is a shit hole that, those of us with common sense, are embarrassed of but are trapped by lack of decent wages and savings to afford to leave. We’re very aware that the UK is a joke to everyone outside of this stupid country.
I think this country has a very “us and them” mentality regarding the EU when in fact we WERE the EU. Our contributions to the EU and the collective prosperity of the organisation were immense. We were part of something bigger now we’re isolated and useless.
A pervasive culture of anti-intellectualism and unwillingness to take responsibility.
>Why is the UK economy lagging behind the US, Germany and others?
B is for Boris.
R is is for Rishi.
E is for the Eurosceptics.
X is for Xenophobia.
I is for Idiots.
T is for Truss.
Starts with a B and ends with rexit.
There’s also the far older “British disease” of short-termism and a failure to invest, which has plagued British industries since the mid to late c19th, and still goes strong.
Why is UK lagging behind other countries who didn’t shot themselves in a foot?
I can’t for the Conservatives life of me figure out Conservatives why the UK economy is Conservatives doing so incredibly poorly when you compare it Conservatives to the United States or German method of Conservatives doing things.
I guess it will just be one of those things we’ll never know. Conservatives.
Hm, let’s see – you put economical sanctions on yourself, you got rid of workers that did excellent work for cheap because of racism, the ~~austerity party~~ Tory Party you’ve voted for since 2010..

“Income inequality in the UK is high compared to most developed countries
The UK is not alone amongst developed countries in having experienced an increase in income inequality over the last 60 years. But income inequality in the UK has grown more than in most” (https://ifs.org.uk/articles/income-and-wealth-inequality-explained-5-charts#:~:text=3.-,Income%20inequality%20in%20the%20UK%20is%20high%20compared%20to%20most,than%20in%20most%20OECD%20countries.)

No, i can’t see any reason. Must’ve been a fluke.
