Ukrainian refugees staying in UK facing homelessness as Homes for Ukraine placements end

  1. Can’t they just being, you know, actual refugees be put up in a hotel like all of the other immigrants coming over in the boats?

  2. > She then went to a second host – an elderly man who Anfisa says wanted her to be his carer and companion.

Here we are with that thing that wasn’t supposed to happen again, but I’m sure if I squint and shut off parts of my brain I can pretend that companion means friend.

  3. Well we can’t house them for free forever, it just isn’t economically feasible.

I don’t understand why we can’t grant them work visas, so they’ll make money and afford to pay rant somewhere. It’s clear the war isn’t going to end any time soon, so we (as a country) might as well make them like economic migrants.

    Seems reasonable.

Edit: I’ve been informed that Ukrainian refugees could work immediately after arriving. So now I’m confused, why are we spending money in the long term to house them? Temporary I understand.

  4. Why are we not prioritising people from Ukrainian over the other people arriving in boats from places with no war?? Send them back & give the places to the people who really need it.64

  5. The story covered in this is just ridiculous – she has 4 dogs and keeps turning down accommodation being offered to her. She is literally being offered refuge and it isn’t good enough. Refuge is about safety, not luxury, and I say that as someone who loves my dog more than I do most people. There is a housing crisis in the UK, the government didn’t think this through past the first 6 months. And as awful as it sounds, a lot of these people would be better off returning to the west of Ukraine than ending up on the street in the UK. Everything here is broken.

  6. It was a great idea, however it was shortsighted as governments thought it would be a quick war and not last beyond the summer. It was also proposed in response to heavy criticism from the EU for us not taking in refugees until much later than other countries, and for putting insane bureaucratic measures in place for them to enter. As with most Tory policies it was done with little forward planning for what would happen after the grace period ended, just so they could score Brownie points with voters. Now they have a small crisis on their hand and it is not one they are going to deal with well, not if past form is anything to go by.

  7. Everybody that sponsored them should be on the hook for housing and feeding them until they’re self sufficient, why should they get council housing and skip the locals that have been potentially waiting years for housing

  8. So she had the cheek to turn down council houses because they weren’t “suitable”?

Send her back to the Ukraine then.

  9. Don’t worry the government has announced a £500m package so councils can buy new homes for Ukraine and afghan refugees, there 1million people on the UK housing register
