Belgian inflation drops further down to 6,6 procent, but food prices continue to rise strongly

  1. I have to concur with the article.

Its definitely noticable, finding milk in a supermarket under a euro is becoming rare (Colruyt is hanging on)

Eggs too (if you can find them because I get the feeling that they are sold out a lot more often then before)

Wood…well no surprise there if I walk around town in a cold morning and see a layer of smog and it smells like I’m standing next to an open fire.

I’m looking out more for items in sale then before. The menu of a week is what is on sale tbh.

  2. So much of this bullshit is artificial manipulation by supermarkets and suppliers. Tell me, what else could possibly explain why a 1.5L of Coke is roughly €2.70 at Carrefour in Belgium, yet €1.33 at Carrefour across the border in France?

Our sugar tax is most certainly not 100%, both countries have VAT, so what else could it possibly be besides greed at worst and ineptitude at best?

  3. This is such a stupid article. Inflation goes down when its negative, not when the % decreases YoY.

  4. Not the only factor, but Colruyt having 30-40% of the market has a chilling effect on price wars. Whenever a retailer wants to do a promotion, Colruyt will react to have the lower price. Hence, no real promotions by incumbent players as Colruyt would match (only exception is Albert Heijn and Jumbo which are hurting Colruyt with their steep promos and 1+5 actions). Or how lowest prices by the biggest player in retail does not equate to lowest prices for the Belgian consumer.

  5. Well it’s unfortunate, for somebody whose main spending is food. I mean, it’s the only thing I actually *have* to buy.

  6. 5 € voor ne kilo ajuin hier bij winkel op de hoek. Normaal 2 euro de kilo. Is een proxy delhaize dus is zowizo wat duurder maar daarvan verschoot ik toch hoor

  7. I always buy the same things so I know a few prices.

    Delhaize’s New Yorker cookies went from 75c to 85c, to 1€ in two months. That’s +33%! Danone’s Skyr went from 2.15 to 3.29, +53% in a year’s time.

  8. I mean, much like with consumption of gas, I saw recently a statistic somewhere that Belgians are also buying less food in supermarkets, especially products that increased in price the most. Yes, right now companies could dictate the market by being greedy, but eventually they will realise that people are getting in habit of not using their products. And what will they do then? They won’t be able to decrease their prices anymore, because economics (duh) so they are pretty much fucked.

It’s stupid but it’s the reality, folks. Just buy less and see companies go bankrupt (or at least pull out of Belgium) because they are fucking stupid.

  9. They wanna make more profit and they know they can do it.
If only the farmers etc also benefited more from all of it though

  10. good, that the only stuff that I buy and need, I’m so glad that people that are not starving wont suffer!

  11. Couple of weeks ago a broodje martino with an egg was €5.60 at Panos at Brussels North Station, well it’s bring bokes back to work now.

  12. Inflation is based on the previous year.
It will keep dropping. By the end of the year the inflation is 2%.

  13. The supermarkets started raising prices during Covid lockdowns, and they have not stopped since.

Lactose milk in Carrefour went from *0.89 euros to 1.25 euros* from 2020 to 2022!

    They are raking it in.
