SNP ‘may be forced to wait until 2026 Holyrood election for de facto referendum’ after Nicola Sturgeon resignation

  1. **Edit:** Save your money. Ships sailed. Turns out you need to have been a member on the day sturgeon resigned.

Fun fact, for £1 a month you can become an SNP member and vote in the imminent leadership contest. They let you vote on their website (lmao danger danger).. You don’t need to live in Scotland, nor be Scottish.

    It’s quite funny.

I will be voting for the most obviously inept and/or politically toxic of the two favourites. Or any candidate that promises to go ahead with the obvious blunder of a GE as a defacto referendum.

This is even more batshit of a system than Labours that got Corbyn elected.

  2. >de facto referendum

That’s not a thing, that’s just something the SNP made up because they have failed to win an actual referendum.

So they’ll probably have to wait a bit longer before they get their ‘made up thing which they’ve decided is a referendum’

  3. They are at least going to have to give the new leader a grace period to settle into the role and to reassess how Scottish people feel now that Sturgeon has gone. It would be foolish to rush into planning a new referendum in the short term, their new leader will want to establish what that means and what an independent Scotland might look like under them for one thing. We saw what happened when a change of leadership affected Brexit and Scotland should not repeat those mistakes itself.
