Lavish Flemish epic grips Belgians – but is it history or propaganda? | Belgium

  1. I don’t get the propaganda thing, I’m not at all one of those flamigants and I can’t even see it, is everything 100% accurate probably not but I think they try to do with what they got, a lot of our history got lost or is only written by one or 2 people, hard to get an accurate view anyways.

  2. When they went over how Ambiorix was an important figure but still lost to the Romans, or how the battle of the gilded spores was “only” one battle, and how Flanders still became part of a greater empire, I stopped thinking it could be considered propaganda.

Could it be even more accurate? Sure. Is it accurate enough for a semi-docu about Flanders and Belgium, yes.

  3. LOL als dit propaganda is dan moeten diegen die dat gemaakt hebben daar toch eens wat lessen in over gaan volgen.

  4. Euh, it can be both! Sponsored by certain political actors (you know whom I’m talking about) but created by television makers and academics who’d rather not make Flemish nationalist propaganda. NGl, an entire episode devoted to the Guldensporenslag is kinda sus, even when they emphasise class struggle over linguistic struggle.

I’m glad this show was made and I hope it generates some healthy debate and inspires some interest for history rather than a simplistic non-debate between two polar opposites who won’t budge an inch in what is a relatively harmless instance of culture wars.

PS: I do agree that Limburg has been unfairly neglected and that the medieval region of Flanders is “doing a lot of nation building in the modern sense”

  5. Previous episode they talked how striking got the common man voting rights (not yet one man one vote). Today they said those voting rights got expanded after ww1 and they mentioned a next big strike in 1936 gave us congé payé.
1302 was a class struggle instead.
If it’s propaganda, it seems to go towards unions and socialism. And I don’t think those were the ones paying for it.

Other ‘propaganda’. First settlers after the ice age were Middle eastern.
Bravest of all the gallic were the Belgae mainly because Caesar had to explain why he lost a legion. And to acquire 10 more legions to come back and commit genocide (doesn’t always pay to be the bravest).
    ….

  6. If the same kind of documentary was to be made about cities for example, I predict it will be judged propaganda if it was about Antwerp and history if it was about Ghent. You lot love to mark it as NVA sponsored documentary, you do your thing, but I think you are taking your wishes for reality judging this propaganda. Maybe just say you don’t like Flanders as a concept and therefore don’t want it to be viewed.

  7. Anyone that watched the last episode and still thinks it’s propaganda is a blind idiot with the intellectual capabilities of a particularly stupid amoeba.

  8. I wonder actually if this project was what Jambon had in mind when he was speaking about the ‘Flemish Canon’ because it seems like it no?

  9. Ridiculous.

If you just look at the one episode *De industriële revolutie* for example: it included plenty of social history, how women had a bad time, how women tried to improve their political influence, the rise of one-man-one-vote. And it did not pretend Flanders was all wonderful: it showed the Congolese in a “zoo”, the human rights abuses in the Congo, the failure to give women the vote, the brutalising poverty of factory workers… It showed the good and the bad side of Flanders. And not a single battle.

Speaking as a “new belgian”, by the way, how it handled the Congolese “zoo” in particular was done with tact and sensitivity, absolutely outstanding television.

  10. People just need to realise that Flanders in it’s current form has only existed since the 70’s.

Those 38000 years of history are about the piece of land that happens to be called Flanders these days. We are culturally completely different from the Belgae tribes and medieval Flanders, saying anything else is just political propaganda.

  11. Yeah, they told us that the whole world was shocked by The ‘guldensporenslag’ and how barbaric it actually was.. Very propaganda like, to say that the flemish dude’s were assholes for The time beeing. I’m Very proud to be flemish now.. Maybe watch The series and Judge yourself ?
