Share of the defense budget transferred to Ukraine as military aid

  1. Looking at this graph makes me wonder why Germany gets so much more criticism than France.

  2. I’d say the political value of the Baltics contribution is far larger than the military one. Compared in absolute numbers it’s a blip compared to Poland, UK or Germany, but it really sets an example that others feel compelled to emulate.

  3. I feel like this metric doesn’t doesn’t tell you that much, if it doesn’t also list what the countries military budgets are. For example, Sweden’s defence spending is 1.3% of GDP, while Poland’s is 2.1%, so IMO the distance between the two “should” be greater when depicted graphically. It favours countries that are underfunding their militaries like Sweden.

Percentage of GDP is a better metric IMO.

  4. My main takeaway from this is that the US military budget is absolutely massive. US has given far more than anyone else and it has barely made a dent in their total budget.

  5. I think it’s a really bad sign that 4 biggest EU economies are far behind America in both relative and absolute military support to Ukraine.

We constantly hear talk about the need for the EU to become independent from American military, how we don’t need them and how we can maintain EU’s security on our own. But now that there’s a war right next to us, we are once again relying on America to do most of the work.

This war is the most important challenge the EU has faced so far. And yet most big EU countries are on the right side of this chart. Lower than the US, lower than the UK. Hell, Canada is providing more military support to Ukraine than France or Italy. Canada.

The EU really needs to change its approach to military if it wants to be a major player on the global stage.

  6. What I would question is how ring exchanges factor into this.

A good deal of aid has been faciliated by richer countries reimbursing smaller ones for donating their outdated hardware that Ukrainian troops are already familiar with.

  7. Some context for Czech Republic.

A week ago Czech Republic declassified what was given to Ukraine during last year.

Together 423 million of euros worth of material was donated. (around 0.16% of CZ GDP).
Additional weapons/ammo/vehicles worth 1.279 billion of euros were bought by Ukraine from Czech republic. (around 0.64% of CZ GDP)

According to these numbers it should be either ~11% donated or ~55% transferred (donated and bought). Calculating with 1.434% of military expenditure.

    Pretty close numbers either way.

  8. If I didn’t know better, this would be just like the Baltic nations doesn’t like Russia or something.
