“Charities do more for the homeless than the Government. ”
Where does she think the charities get the money from ?
What an absolute moron.
So he went to rehab and then went straight back to hostels with other homeless who presumably were drinking and taking drugs. Why didn’t she take him in for awhile ? Can’t blame the government for everything

If your own family have ‘abandoned’ you too, then what hope have you got. Terrible thing to happen but people must be willing to help themselves first.
Everyone nervously awaiting the eviction ban expiry:
Comments in this thread are the proof that the public do not give a shit about you or what will happen to you – and that you better [removed as got last post deleted] begin asserting yourselves politically, before you end up suffering the same fate as the guy in the OP.
Don’t fucking stay in the state of learned helplessness that people seem to have settled into – you will need to fight politically and organize together, and such political action is rarely successful while staying confined to the law.
He abandoned 6 six children for his addiction ,where’s the sympathy for them
Nobody is coming to save you
Blaming ‘the government’ for everything is a cop out. Can equally blame the family, systemic poverty over generations, alcoholism etc.
Abandoned by his family too it seems
I can understand her anger, but the sad reality is that many alcoholics cannot maintain their own lives, and at 44 years old, he isn’t anyone’s responsibility to be carried through life.
I know that sounds harsh, but that’s the reality. She cannot be angry at the Irish government because they didn’t hold a grown man’s hand and literally walk him through each step of his daily life.
No body has the resources to do that, and even if they did, they wouldnt be helping them.
I’m a recovering addict, and know what It is to be failed by the state, but we HAVE to acknowledge personal responsibility.
So the sister didn’t take him in to help her brother and the only reason I can see why she wouldn’t is over either drugs or drink.
If he chose substance abuse instead of getting in a position to take help and use it to rebuild his life, the state didn’t kill him, he killed himself with his own choices.
You’re not the states responsibility if you’re an adult.
What support can the government give to a person who is addicted to drugs, has developed mental health issues and doesn’t want to stay in a hotel or a mental institution. Serious question.
I just don’t think money is the root of these issues because the government has thrown millions st this problem, there are still hundreds of rough sleepers
Someone definitely erred in placing him in a wet hostel just after he got sober. Both wet and dry hostels are needed to support all sorts of people
Anyone ask her why she didn’t help him?
For anyone with any compassion, if by any chance you manage to see this first: maybe turn back now.
It’s exactly what you expect in here, and if people here see someone as subhuman I don’t know how much there can be done to change their minds.
Sure we have all been abandoned by the state. As soon as you can’t afford rent you are homeless. We only even talk about it when someone turns up dead but there are thousands more people right now going through the exact same thing he did before he died and they wont even be acknowledged until they are dead
The sister should be embarrassed to blame the government for her brothers situation. She has not mentioned the states role in the 44 years of his life before that point or the help from the state he received in that 44 years which would have been substantial. He was given all the tools to survive as an adult, he was responsible for his own decisions and actions. It’s terrible so many die on the streets and in this man’s case it’s particularly awful for his children. However, and I will be brutally honest here; in a lot of these cases their circumstances are entirely of their own making and so it is their own fault.
When did we go from expecting family to support you to expecting the nanny state to coddle a fully grown man
Sympathetic bunch in these comments
What I never understood is that even when homelessness, and particularly the rough sleeping element of it, was at a very manageable level, we never ever ever seemed to be willing to put adequate resources into ending it.
We’ve a housing crises at the moment which is obviously making things much worse, but I’m talking more about the really chaotic and rough sleeping element of the situation.
There’s clearly an unwillingness at some level to do something about doing anything other than throwing pittance at charities and seeing it as an inevitable part of life.
Im sorry but you cant just blame the state for all of lifes problems
It’s scary. So many of us live paycheque to paycheque and if we lost our jobs tomorrow, we wouldn’t have enough in our savings to cover next month’s rent. I’m extremely lucky that my parents could take me back I’m, but not everyone has that option, for one reason or another. Don’t get me wrong, addiction is a huge factor in homelessness, but it’s always been there. More and more people that were literally just in gainful employment are ending up on the streets within days of losing their jobs. I believe that the government aren’t doing enough to help people off the streets, sure. I also believe that they aren’t doing enough to prevent people having to live on the streets. This cost of living crisis needs to be addressed. Energy prices need to be curbed, rents need to be capped and the living wage needs to reflect the rising cost of living. Politicians’ salaries cut be cut and the savings could fund these things. Safe housing facilities with round the clock security and zero-tolerance for crime should be available for free or a small charge for people looking to get off the streets. No one should ever have to be homeless.
