Just came back from Germany and saw this small 3 wheeled truck over there, is this common and road legal? How come we don’t have them here in Canada ?

  1. Yes they are common and road legal (not on highways). They drive a maximum of 45km/h. In my village a lot of teens drive them as you’re allowed to drive them when you’re 16 years old.

  2. It’s a Piaggio Ape 🇮🇹.
Technology wise it is closer to a scooter (piaggio vespa) than a truck.

  3. Italian “cult” company name is Piaggio, a former fighter plane mechanic switched after the 2nd WW to building motorcycles, the most famous one the Vespa, but also the Ape is “cult”, built since 1948:

ah here, buy one at home 🙂

“An Italian icon on 3 wheels – Apé is the most compact, economical and versatile commercial vehicle, both inside and outside the city.”

  4. You would freeze to death in them😂

But apart from problems in extreme heat and cold they are very nice. Easy on the gallon, easy to find a parking spot.

You can drive them with a 50cc (AM?) or car (B) license.

Back in the days – afaik – in Italy you wouldn’t need a license. As others said, made by Piaggio who also gifted us the Vespa.

Ones in good condition can be pricey though.

There are similar designed electric variants (made by other companies) used byvarious delivery services – much uglier though imo.
