Yea, I always see in FB these days “lets take care of our own” as if 1. Its not a simple dogwhistle saying I dont like foreign people, 2. That its a binary option between taking care of Irish people and foreigners, and 3. That they actually give a shit about down and out Irish people anyway.
Generally the people who are “down with foreigners” seem to have a severe lack of education, no worldview, and are about as productive as a perforated ladle.
The “let’s take care of our own” crowd didn’t give a fuck about our own before the influx of immigrants.
It’s like a never ending societal ladder of ‘people who I think are more shit than me’ and there’s always a campaign to get rid of the lowest rungs. Like:

The reality we’re living in though, is that those in power neither take care of our own, nor take care of immigrants who arrive here – and then pit both groups against each other – benefiting the government and far right alike.
We _could_ be hiring the influx of immigrants in a state-led house building program to solve the housing crisis for both locals and immigrants – allowing continued immigration without creating a zero-sum game pitting locals vs immigrants against each other – but our government very deliberately are ensuring housing is a perma-crisis, so…
If you’re a fan of divide-and-rule, having no limits on immigration when the country can’t sustain it, is the policy that leads to division – not the policy of pausing immigration until we sort our shit out.
No problem with ukrainians but someone from Georgia or Albania does not need asylum protection. There’s no war in either country and there’s any number of safe countries between them and us. Govt needs to be a lot more stringent about who it let’s in, we’re heading towards chaos otherwise

The point that always gets me is the taking in of these people will affect Irish culture. 2 different times I got to the point of commenting how does people arriving affect irish culture like music, dance, games, crafts, food, language, song etc. After a few back and forth comments you end up with “it comes down to genetics and they can never be irish” and the commentator being an Ethno-nationalist.

If a rich developed Western economy starts to have low birth rates then over the next generation that should lead to improved wealth equality as wages begin to rise to better levels. Corporate profits and shareholders hate this.
