  1. This year 51.10% of the ballots were cast online, making it the first time in the world where more votes were done online in a general elections than with a paper ballot.

Estonia has had online voting for 18 years. This is made possible by the Estonian ID card which has a private/public key combo. It is used for legally binding digital signatures and to encrypt anything, including anonymous online votes.

Voter turnout reached 63,7%.This year there was a new turnout methodology that includes all Estonians living abroad. Compared to the previous methodology it would’ve been one of the higher turnouts.

  2. I don’t like e voting. Ofc paper ballots have problems as well.

But with electronic voting it is much easier to scale abuse of the system.

I’m honestly surprised estonia is not more wary of russian interference.

Also, how does the annulment work? I mean how it is not counted double?

  3. I posted it for mainly two reasons. First to let the world know that Estonia uses online voting to such an extent and secondly because I know online voting is a very polarising topic. In many countries this system is not supported, so it might lead to interesting conversations.
