What a sad and unnecessary tragedy. I feel so sorry for their families.
I hate the way this is phrased. It’s not the car which decided to overtake, it’s the driver. This accident is therefore the driver’s responsibility. Similarly, the pedestrian didn’t just die, she was killed by negligent driving.
TBH it sounds like it was really the car with the two deceased that was at fault, the first car might have been impatient but didnt appear to do anything wrong
Unfortunately, it’s a national sport to overtake stationary buses. As soon as a VDL bus slows down at a stop, cars pass it at twice the speed limit.
RIP to the pedestrian who’s only fault was being in the wrong spot at the wrong time.
This is absolutely terrible. RIP to all the families involved. If I observe the images and look at the damage on the vehicles, it seems to me that this is NOT a 50kph accident. The driver must have been travelling well above the speed limit to cause that amount of damage.
Update: L’essentiel has a more detailed account of what happened. According to the bus driver, the driver was travelling at high speed:
On RTL there is a photo of a car upside down beside the building and marks above the first floor balcony level. The impact speed/force must have been incredible. I feel terrible for the lady who was walking alone minding her own business.
‘De Parquet sicht nom uergen Accident no Zeien. Hannert deem éischte Gefier, dat de Bus iwwerholl huet, wier eng Schlaang vun aneren Autoe gewiescht, déi vum zweete Gefier iwwerholl goufen.
So according to the prosecutor there was a line of cars behind the first vehicle overtaking the bus. The second vehicle overtook the whole line of cars until it crashed into the first car.
Looking at the picture on RTL it seems that the second car was driving at a highly excessive speed in order for it to become airborne hitting the balcony on the first floor of a building.
I drive this route to and from work, and I instinctively knew which bus stop it was before the photos confirmed.
So often I’m heading in the airport direction and a car will overtake a stationary bus on the other side of the road. I have almost head-on accidents a few times a month.
Yeah, yeah, overtake the bus. It’s definitely worth eradicating a few lives for….
So sad
I have already overtaken buses (carefully) but I will no longer.
Unfortunately, mistakes happen. The problem is when there is when you end in a point of no return.
In just the past two weeks I have seen at least three overtaking maneuvers that were absolutely suicidal. I am literally waiting for something like this to happen when I’m driving. I don’t know if it’s specific to Luxembourg but I feel like it’s been insane recently.
In the previous 2 days i experienced 2 situations where oncoming traffic drivers were overtaking another vehicle in a very narrow space between two towns and i was coming from the opposite direction. Had i driven the allowed speed of 90 i wouldn’t have been here. I always have to slow fucking down so i dont die. Just because some idiot drives recklessly. This mostly happens with auto schools, tractors, elderly drivers and buses. In these situations people go mental and overtake even when their life is in danger. Whenever i read the daily ticket of accidents or listen to the news lately its always something fatal. Just today after work I’ve seen 3 police patrols in a span of 10km. Police is ever-present on the streets, one can think its state of emergency… in fact only the standard of driving is dying.
Edit: If you’re not sure this fatality can happen with 50kmph, just search for crash tests. I was astonished what 50kmph means when its direct colision.
RIP to the woman in the crosswalk minding her own business. Hopefully first car driver gets convicted since he should have been the one instead of the woman.
This is why I rather prefer to wait for the bus to start driving than to overtake it. I rather wait a few minutes to be alive than to get into an accident.
fck. i’ve passed by the depanage service cars carrying the wrecks. was wondering how bad the accident must’ve been 🙁
Seriously, it’s fucking surreal. Not even a face to face collision, so relative speed didn’t make it worse, and still it seems a NASCAR accident, with a car getting airborne like a freaking fireball.
Honestly, I have seen and lived in lots of places, but nowhere else I have seen the same level of damage in car accidents I have witnessed in Luxembourg: cars split in two by a tree, hanging on a one meter high concrete guardrail on a 30km/h zone… but where the fuck are you rushing you all every morning? What’s so amazing and irresistible that cannot wait a couple of minutes more? Why road raging to get to your workplace as soon as possible? Risking yours and (unfortunately) other people’s life to arrive 5 minutes ahead?
How can you drive through a pedestrian crossing at that speed, with a bus covering part of the crossing? How stupid, senseless, idiot you have to be not to think about it?
Everything is absurd in those pictures: from the accident itself to the ridiculous death toll, to the level of damage, to policemen and tow truck drivers laughing like they were having a good time. This shit really made me sick…
Drivers here sometimes insane, especially from Neudorf going to Kirschberg, it is barely wide enough for the 2 lanes, yet people need to take over a bus…
Today I was on a bus, and while we were waiting in a stop (30sec let’s say), 2 pedestrians were almost hit. One of them was a similar setup: bus, behind pedestrians passing, behind 2-4 card waiting in line, and an idiot taking over all of them, almost hitting the crossing pedastrian…
Perhaps I’m being too tough on the police, but they seem more interested in catching people with no road tax/ expired CTs than catching speeding and unsafe motorists. Drivers seem to be getting far more arrogant and aggressive than they were a year ago.
Sad that I mentioned this in this subreddit just a matter of hours ago…
