Eamon Ryan: Free public transport would ‘increase level of unnecessary trips’

  1. I came across research recently which concluded the same thing.
What’s more important for public transport is that there is a reliable, easy to use, frequent service.
    Providing free transport didn’t help.

(That said, Germany seems to be extending its free transport programs based on their success)

  2. Make public transport free during rush hour times. Encourage people to use it rather than driving to work. Make it cheap during non rush hour times. Make long distance travel cheap too. Parking at stations should be free/validated with purchase of a ticket.

  3. So basically: if we provide free travel people might use public transport, but if we make it financially not viable for people to drive they also might use public transport. It’s because only one option let’s them tax the absolute bejaysus out of people and the other doesn’t. Same outcome surely ?

Could they not trial it for 2 weeks and see ? Or make it really cheap/convenient/easy to access for people and see if that helps either 😂
It works in Germany because their public transport system is amazing.

  4. So what? That sounds good to me… People using the public transport is good no?

Or are we supposed to confine our journeys to only to/from work and to/from shopping

  5. Tangentially related to this… if you plop solar panels and storage batteries on 1 million houses in ireland at a cost of 25k each (well above current cost), it will cost €25bn.

I know things aren’t this simple, and it would take a decade to do. But this government is not serious about climate change, even with the greens. The PUP cost around €9bn over 2.5 years, not to mention the business supports.

  6. We should start with doing a survey of how people use public transport or not as the case may be. I’d use it a lot more if it were reliable – which it isn’t.

  7. What is an unnecessary trip? If I am bored out of the old gourd and I take an “unnecessary” trip into town, I’m going to walk around, look in shops, maybe spend some money, put some VAT into the exchequer. Maybe I will call a friend, see what they are doing. They’ll take an “unnecessary” trip too and we will meet for coffee or grab a pint or get a meal. Also, it a fucking bus. The more full it is, the better.

The current gov are so afraid that they will accidentally help someone who won’t spend money, they will do it at the cost of those who will.

  8. What are unnecessary trips? It’s none of Eamon Ryan’s business whether bus trips are necessary. Also how come a green candidate is saying this about busses but not about cars which pollute way more and have definitely been used for “unnecessary trips”. Smh green capitalism is a nonsensical ideology.

  9. So they want you to stop driving your car, but want you to pay top dollar for a shit service. In Dublin I’ve legit had a bus vanish, only for 2-3 of the same bus to then turn up altogether.

Now they want to charge you a congestion charge for driving to work, when the public transport option is junk, all for a job that you could do at home, but can’t cause employers have an archaic outlook on control in the workplace.

  10. What does he even mean? What’s an “unnecessary trip”? If I go into town for free, go to the cinema, get a couple pints and have a meal, have I not contributed to the economy?

Does he mean someone having the audacity to get the train to Dun Laoghaire and walk on the beach, not spending money is “unnecessary”?

  11. Theres such misery underpinning his response. Poorer workers walk/cycle part or all of the way to work because they cant afford the bus. If its free they get to choose. Why is that such a bad thing

  12. Jesus Christ. You know the whole ridiculous furore over 15-minute cities? It’s moronic attitudes like this from those on power that directlt fuel that kind of shite.

There’s literally no such thing as an unnecessary trip. If people want to travel for *any* reason, then the trip is a valid one. That’s it. That’s all there is to it.

  13. What defines an “unnecessary trip”? Who he’s to tell what journey’s people make are unnecessary? What a fucking cunt he is.

  14. Is he really saying if we make it free people will use it and that’s an issue?!

The fuck is going on with this government lads. They’re actually idiots

  15. I lived in Prague few years ago, price of ANNUAL public transport pass for an adult was and still is 3650 CZK or €155.

It includes buses, trams, underground metro, commuter trains, cable cars and rafts over the Vltava river.

On top of that, public transport is free for a parent with a child in a pram or for youngsters up to 15 years old. 🤦🏻‍♂️ You don’t believe me…feel free to check it out yourself on https://pid.cz/en/travelling-around-prague/?tab=2 and select long-term tab.

Never experienced delay in any of the services…if one metro train leaves in front of your nose, another one is there within 2-5 minutes. Long story short…public transport there is out of this world and CHEAP! Although if you get caught without a fare as there’s no barriers to enter the underground metro, you’re fucked…folks who are controlling tickets are always accompanied by Czech police officers with full gear so it’s either pay the fine or face the jail. Their police is ruthless if you mess with them or you brake the law, which is fair.

On the other hand…Irish public transport is is crap, used to live in Cobh, Co. Cork and worked in Mahon, Cork city. We didn’t have a car then, so I was commuting on train and buses around 5 hours per day, which with car would take about an hour per day. Or when bus simply wouldn’t stop at the designated stop…

On one occasion, I was so wrecked from work, that I fell asleep on commuter train from Cork to Cobh (ride is 30 minutes long) and train left to Cork again. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Horrible experience with commuting on public transport overall in Cork city.

So how does Eamon Ryan expect me to share a ride or carpool with two child car seats in my car? Or who the hell is he to tell me how will I use my property?
