Another pay rise for TD’s perhaps?

  1. It’s like people forget that he introduced the 50% and 20% discounts – the first fare reductions in decades.

  2. Cost has been shown time and time again not to be one of the main barriers of getting people out of cars.

The AA are only putting it out there because they know that.

  3. If I’m going to croker for a game I drive because it’s cheaper.

He’s talking out of his backside.

People drive because it’s cheaper a lot of the time

  4. How about you tax Dublin car holders seeing as they are the only county in the entire country with a remnants of an actual Public Transport System. The greens don’t see outside of the Pale, they should be called the Greys.

  5. Ffs his department has slashed fares, introduced a bunch of new bus services, increased frequencies all over the place. This whole free public transport thing is transparently a ploy by the motor lobby led by the AA to undermine legitimate improvements that are being made to public transport nationwide (against a backdrop of a government dominated by people who would tear these improvements out in a heartbeat if they got the opportunity).

Ryan’s response here is absurdly dumb and inexplicable. But the thrust is actually sort of fair. There’s evidence to suggest that free public transport largely pulls extra ridership from people who would otherwise walk or cycle.

This may be desirable. But as far as reducing car dependency is concerned, it’s a waste. Because cost is rarely the reason people drive instead of take public transport. Instead, frequency and reliability are the driving factors behind transit ridership. The AA knows this, which is why they’re pushing the government to waste time on free public transport instead of anything more constructive which might actually threaten the interests of the motor industry.

Still a dumb comment, but I’ll judge him by his record as a minister, not his consistent inability to communicate properly or answer questions sensibly
