Ending eviction ban could ‘very possibly’ increase homelessness, says Minister for Housing

  1. It’s not a can that can be kicked down the road forever.

Some people want to sell their houses or end tenancies that are out of contract.

    We can’t stop that indefinitely.

  2. A broken condom would be as much use with the Minister for Housing portfolio as this thoroughly useless man.

  3. Everyone knows what to do why is it not being done and for such a long time – an immediate emergency tax on all air bnb transactions, purchasing mobile homes and running more schemes like that, serious audit of HAP properties which are be abused/used for rent, increasing repurposing of buildings , opening market for landlords who have up to 3 properties only and pushing down the vultures, making rent a room more lucrative

  4. No different to what the British done to the poor when ruling here…..

a gross indifference to the lot of anyone who can’t afford extortionate rents…..we have one worst rates of low-pay in the western world and highest rents in Europe…..this can logically only end one way

  5. “We must make a mass human sacrifice, as we’ve angered the market gods and they’ve given us the housing crisis.”

  6. I understand why we can’t continue an eviction ban forever, but I was under the impression that the idea of it was to keep people out of homelessness until an alternative was arranged. I haven’t heard of any significant policy change in the time the ban was in place. It only served to delay the wave of homelessness, and doesn’t address the causes.

  7. What’s even worse is that over 30000 units are currently tied up in the courts with no decision date in sight.

Interest rates and materials costs have derailed the industry and the will to build from private developers. Developers are moving forward with the highest level of caution this year and won’t be pushing new projects through planning.

I work in one of the largest residential firms in Ireland and we’ve had redundancies recently.

This is only going to get worse and the government, banks and developers are willing to hold. Absolute disgrace. Prepare for this mess to get bigger

  8. Why would it increase homelessness? It would mean that bad tenants would be asked to move – which is not unreasonable if there is a supporting evidence. It could also mean that tenants will be asked to leave do that new tenants can be put in at a higher rent. That is not fair and any such replacement should be on the basis of a limited increase in rent…which would possibly increase turnover of properties but not kick people out. Am I missing something ?

  9. It will. But making short declarative statements. About how to fix things. That is. What’s clearly needed. In these desperate times. With so many bondholders.

  10. Finally can kick my tenant and rent it to a Ukrainian family. The gov will pay indefinitely
