Taoiseach: Ireland should avoid ‘woke versus anti-woke’ fight over education about trans people

  1. To be fair to him – and I am anything but a fan – it’s good that he’s been sounding support for trans people and that trans people and society at large can hear that support coming from the Taoiseach. That is meaningful.

What’s important now is that school Wellbeing programmes are reformed to be more inclusive of LGBT issues. I know Norma Foley says this will only take place after consultation but hopefully that won’t take forever.

  2. Urgh… Can’t we just leave that nonsense to the yanks. It’s real simple, mind your own business and don’t be a cunt.

  3. Never thought I’d say this but I agree with him. There are extremists on both sides of the political spectrum and engaging with either of them in conversation has never led anywhere.

  4. He is right. That sort of framing is to be avoided. Hopefully a way can be found, rationally and science based, to educate young people about the complexity of human experience and its expression. If extremists from both sides are displeased, all the better.

  5. On a side note since we are on the topic of education – is anorexia, bulimia or self harming taught on the primary school curriculum?

  6. He’s learning people less likely to pay attention to what govt is doing, if they’re debating if a man can get pregnant.

  7. Can’t we leave this bollocks to the yanks half the people moaning don’t have kids in schools and the other half probably don’t send their kids to school

  8. **Society:** Best I can offer you is the steady growth of the far right, almost entirely over this one incredibly niche issue that barely impacts anyone either way. Final offer!

  9. This might be the second sensible thing I’ve heard him say. I can’t remember what the first one was, but I’ll be fair because I can remember that I said something to this extent a month ago like

  10. Unavoidable. You can’t not have this debate when one side is completely unable to accept reality or find any sort of middle ground & this is a fairly pathetic attempt at shutting it down.

Point in case being the LGFA allowing males to compete in female sport – a total recipe for disaster which is not wanted by the vast majority and yet was pushed through with no discussion, no debate and those who did so won’t even acknowledge or discuss it.

That sort of stuff just doesn’t fly.

  11. We really really need a socially conservative / right wing party in Ireland. FG are a joke. There is an open void for such a party in the roster

  12. Yeah, can we just get the whole homelessness and better living conditions sorted. To me these are bigger problems that are affecting more people.

  13. I wonder will Mrs Doubtfire, Psycho, White Chicks, Some Like it Hot and so on be banned in conservative states? You know, to prevent indoctrination.

Being downvoted by right wing fascists is always an honor

  14. I’d love to know what he thinks “woke” means. As far as I can see it just means “politically correct”. Weird “both sides” vibes from this kind of comment.

  15. “Woke” or progressive ideas have had free reign in Ireland for the past 20 years with very little resistance. Basically we have already fully embraced and imported the American liberal worldview. We even took their people and put them in our government to show us how it’s done (Katherine Zappone FFS, she would out-liberal Elizabeth Warren)

I don’t know why people are surprised that some American conservative worldview will come along with that.

It was never going to be the case that we could only import one half of a culture war.

  16. The GAA recently announced that biological males that identify as women can play in the women’s leagues. Is everyone cool with that? Did they check with the women players first? They did in their fuck.

That decision is one side of a culture war. Resisting it is the other.

  17. Ireland needs to stop this growing right-wing bullshit already.

Fucking Burke family and Healey-Rae families spouting their hateful bullshit should be met with firm resistance, not outright support.

No wonder Tommy Robinson was able to stir up such goddamn hatred here, the seeds were already planted for his arrival.

  18. So In a couple of years we had or government call the people anti vaxers, far right and now woke just because you don’t agree or actually have concerns regarding information, literature and or a product/service they want to get out. Really good leadership.
