Fine for man who rode bike on Brussels Ring Road: ‘Had to be at appointment on time’

  1. To get to an appointment on time, a 67-year-old man from Uccle travelled a stretch of the Brussels Ring Road in Drogenbos by bicycle. “I was returning from Valenciennes in France that day,” the accused, Christian Duchâteau, recounted.

“I had an appointment at 7pm in the Carrefour car park in Drogenbos. But traffic on the motorway was jammed and I would be hopelessly late. So I parked my car at the Total car park along the Ring in Ruisbroek and there I switched to my folding bike.”

The police noticed the man and immediately gave chase. “With flashing lights and sirens. They actually cornered me, so I just stayed put. I immediately admitted I was at fault. But they were really angry and filed a police report,” the man says.

“They added ironically that I was a fine example to do something like that at my age. I thought I would just get a fine but then a summons followed.”

The man had to answer in the police court in Halle. The prosecutor asked for the man to be fined 320 euros and banned from driving for 15 days.

“He drove on the breakdown lane, then a bit on the first lane before continuing his way on the breakdown lane. There was heavy traffic, yet the accused thought it was normal to go there with his bicycle. He did not see the seriousness of it,” the prosecutor summarised the facts.

In the end, the man got off with an 80-euro fine. Police judge Johan Van Laethem also gave the man a clear message. “I know the circumstances, but still it remains abnormal to engage in such a scene with a bicycle,” the judge stated.

Despite the interception, Christian still managed to get to his appointment on time. “So actually I don’t really regret my decision then,” he said, laughing.

    Have we found /u/SuckMyBike? 😉

  2. Riding on the R0 with a cycle? Whatever person he had an appointment with must be highly impressed the guy was ready to die for them.

  3. How odd.

There is a service in china where a guy sits in traffic for you and you get a moped or small motorbike to get to your location faster. They do like a switch during heavy traffic jams

  4. I often get the impression that while the police in the wallonie tries to maintain public order, the police in flanders sees it as their primary duty to force the people to respect the law.

How does this man dare not to be stuck in traffic like everybody else. Does he think he is someone special or what?
