Plan for lifetime ban for Channel migrants is unworkable, say charities

  1. It is not meant to be workable, it is just another way of the Tories saying we are trying to solve this but human rights law is the problem because they want to create a culture war.

Actually it is really easy to solve this with safe and legal routes and allowing refugees to work when they get here while their applications are being processed.

  2. The fact that the biggest group of migrants came from Albania last year shows what a joke our asylum system has become. That would be like poor British people getting on a dingy to France and trying to claim asylum.

  3. But it “sounds” good though.

If you are a right wing, Brexit loving, immigrant hating, floating tory voter this sounds exactly like the sort of thing you want to hear from the government.

  4. Organisations that profit from mass migration and refugee crossings say that plans to limit or deter small boats is unworkable. Shocker.

  5. Asylum? Albania isnt at war! They are economic migrants floating across because they know they will not get the right to work in the UK, the ones with skills we need apply and get in legally.

  6. They’ve had 13 years to get any of this right

    And have failed utterly

At some point even their most ardent fans have got to ask themselves “are they really trying to solve this problem?”

They’ve an 80 seat majority, they could fix immigration tomorrow if they actually wanted to.

  7. I mean of course it’s not, the whole plan hinges on being able to send them to Rwanda and the authorities there have made it clear that they’ll only take a small percentage of our asylum seekers and only healthy able-bodied people at that.

    This isn’t a coherent policy it’s just a soundbite.

  8. Smoke & Mirrors to try to make the people who voted Brexit because of the immigration issue believe they are trying to do what they said they would. It’s all another pack of lies that obviously can’t & won’t work. They’ll be long gone before they can pass the legislation…

  9. Is that the same charities that are using their donations to run the boats that go out into the sea and load all the migrants on board? And then bring them across the sea to Europe?
    Those charities?
    They can SMD.

  10. Sorry we dont know who you are and you’ve come here not though a customs checkpoint so here is a lifetime ban from England, please do not attempt to cross then channell again or you can’t come in.

  11. “Downing Street said the government would eventually open up more safe routes for asylum claims, but only “once we have control over our borders”.

To have control of the borders you need safe routes, otherwise you end up with people coming by boat and a thriving people trafficking trade.

This is a Tory created problem brought on by no safe routes, no asylum processing centres in Calais or effective centres in the UK. They’ve underfunded every level of our immigration system so people waiting for their claims to be approved or processed are stuck here for months to years.

It’s broken and like this because this is how the Tories have designed it to be… also it creates good headlines to rile up Tory supporters

  12. The charities kept relevant / in business by people illegally crossing the channel trying to dissuade the government from making it harder for people to illegally cross the channel probably shouldn’t be news

  13. So our big solution is to make a law that makes it illegal for *illegal* migrants to come to the UK. Is it just me ….

  14. All good timing isnt it. Boris was all over the papers for partygate, so announce sending immigrants to Rwanda

Boris all over the paper’s again for lying, so announce we will get tough on immigrants again.

  15. We might as well stop aiding Ukraine, stop joining in with any conflicts and just sit on our little island and keep quiet.

  16. Well of course they’d say that… Their whole purpose for existing is having more migrants / refugees coming across.

  17. The parade of people calling it ‘illegal migrants’ is a flood – they’re all wrong, they’re people who migrate legally. Whether they qualify for international protection per an (legal) asylum application is when they may be staying illegally after a lawful decision is given that requires them to leave.

In other words, tough shit. Before Brexit, they could have returned them to the first country they landed under Dublin Regulation but no, oooo noooo, can’t be having a European Union now, can we?

  18. I don’t understand why people who aren’t coming from war torn countries would spend £3000 to come on a dingy and get asylum rather than getting a work visa and paying £100 for a ticket?

  19. The British public want to be able to help refugees but the system has been made a mockery off. It doesn’t work when such a large sum of the people arriving are from places with no war & where it’s mostly men.64

  20. There still isn’t a clear legal route though. How do you monitor a lifetime ban when you don’t know where they have come from.

  21. The simple fact is, the refugee crisis will only get worse. The only viable long-term solution is a country so hostile that they choose to go elsewhere, of their own volition.

The walls are going up all around Europe. In a decade’s time, I wouldn’t be surprised if refugees were greeted with gunfire.

  22. Left or right. Can we all agree that illegal migration and possibly even legal migration into this country is unsustainable. Not forgetting that their culture can wildly vary causing issues with integration and respecting this countries laws. Curious to know what those who support these economic migrants think about this. I rarely see any answers provided as to how we can help these people without a detriment to the UK population. Especially as we are in a cost of living crisis right now.

  23. Fingerprinting technology should make it very easy to screen for future returners………. pity our immigration law isn’t as definite…
