A broken clock is still right twice a day. But actions need to be taken so that this support is more than just words. Trans people should be able to live their lives in this – in their – country without fear. Certain groups are trying to ferment the usual kind of bile, but if the Government can take some steps towards backing up these words of support it would go a long way.
Having trans issues form part of school Wellbeing programmes would be a great start.
I think it’s a bad idea to build flavour-of-the-day American culture war stuff into the curriculum.
Give it a year or two, when nobody cares about this any more, and then make the decision with a cooler head.
Show us the syllabus
Leo trying to point score on this issue, that’s all the Parties want to do with it, they don’t care
>It doesn’t have to be a value judgement in either direction to challenge anyone’s personal or religious opinions.
Poor Leo, desperately trying to find a fence to sit on.

No, just no. Stop putting ideas in young peoples head
> ‘Trans people exist’
This isn’t contested by anyone. This is literally the least controversial statement he could make.
America does something nuts –
Irish government “lads quick”.
Didn’t learn much about the birds and bees in school growing up. Even though the clueless teacher brought a model of the anatomy in and even at that I probably stared out the window.
Gender identity is a cultural issue to be learned through life experience as you get older. It’d be lost on kids and frankly confusing for them.
Teaching children respect about all cultures is far more important
What a fucking idiot. Go build some houses you useless twat
Just do it then, put it in sex ed or sphe. Seems very straightforward. I get they want their soundbites but is this not just something they can implement fairly smoothly?
I’ve no problem with the topic of transgenderism being taught, if it helps some child comes to terms with themselves better, then go for it.
No problem with this once the nonsense idea that biological sex can be changed is not instructed as factual science.
In any case, I’d expect huge revolt here by many many groups outside of the IrelandIsFull crowd. Other European cultures who have integrated into Ireland would have similar views to them on this issue. Just ask a Polish, Indian or Chinese parent what they’d think about it.
Enoch Burke in shambles.

Yet again we’re trying to be American over and over
This pseudoscientific ideological bullshit has no place in primary schools
I think instead of focusing on explicitly teaching trans people existing to kids in primary school (or any sociological demographic), we should instead be giving those kids tools to understand and navigate the world with their own brains.
Kids are smart little shits, let’s not underestimate them, they shouldn’t just be told “trans people exist”, they should be told “there are people different from you that exist, here are the tools for respecting those different to you”.
As a trans person, I still won’t vote for Leo.
The more I read about this, the less I think it should be taught in schools. I keep seeing snippets on here but with no real detail what it is they will actually be saying. I talk to my chap about this stuff myself so happy enough to leave it at that until there is way more info on what the curriculum looks like.
Kids start to think and ask about bodies, gender, and identity way before secondary school. Trans issues are an extension of some fairly normal childhood topics. Do some people just not talk to their kids?
I don’t care about that man at all, but on the topic of the actual debate there is nothing wrong with teaching children that trans people exist. It doesn’t have to be an in depth topic at primary school level. It could be more in depth in Sex Ed class at a secondary school level. Teaching a child that some people identify differently isn’t going to shatter their worldview, in all likelihood they won’t care. On the otherhand, children for ages have used words like gay or queer as an insult, its clear that many already have a basic understanding of the topic- but certain people are unhappy when it’s taught as something that is normal, and not something that should be made fun of.
Loathe that cretin
This is why China wins in the end
I’d be ok with it in secondary….no need for it in primary. Leave it to parents if they want to address with kids of that age

The more comments I read on this subject, the less supportive I become.
Stop trying to enforce your own feelings, your beliefs, and personal gender identity issues into every aspect of society.
Do you, be happy with whoever you want to be, but leave children and the schools the f*ck alone.
Read through the comments here. Amazing that we want to teach our kids the wonders of the universe and nature, and open their minds to the beauty and complexity in the world – and we freak out when that’s applied to our own species. That people can look different, be different, love differently is so so scary to so many people.
But I agree with many here ; trans people, who make up less than a percent of the population, are being used as a political wedge, to exploit fear and misunderstanding, and people are falling for it. Very depressing.
He would of course
People “exist” regardless of whether others recognise they are a gender other than what they are born as. This portrayal that trans people vanish into a vortex if others don’t believe they are the gender they believe they are is the worst type of emotional blackmail
Trans people: *exist*
Leo: “Trans people exist”
These comments are ruh roh raggy
Why cant they go and do their fucking jobs on housing and health…a fucning sideshow.
Who gives a fuck? It shouldnt matter whats between your legs or what you want to call it as long as you arent going out of your way to harm others. Let people be whatever they want. Just be decent human beings to each other. I feel like there will be far more people in hell for not doing that than there ever would be for being trans or gay or whatever else is out there.
Edit: turned off autocorrect because it was insane and I apparently suck at proofreading.
Great! I always say we need more platitudes, empty slogans, and waffling from this government of hard-nosed realists
A curriculum in desperate need of reform for years – I sleep.
Americans going ape shit over trans stuff – Get it in the schools!
The only thing is….what the fuck would this have to do with getting a job? At least the other subjects are practical in helping kids decide what they wanna do (ablbeit there could be even more done to push students in certain directions)…but what the fuck would gender studies have to do with anything? Youre literally seeing tons of folks in the Us with useless degrees unable to get jobs in their “field of expertise”…..its all just nonsense…
I don’t think trans rights are more important than anyone else’s nor are they interesting. I most certainly don’t want my daughter being taught about that in primary school. She can learn it for herself. They didn’t even have sex Ed when I was in school until secondary and I knew by then. Its complete and utter shit like this that is even being discussed over important issues like mental health. Can we all agree everyone is different, sometimes in life you’ll get people who don’t like you and sometimes it’s for no apparent reason. We steer away from that and make friends. If you are being bullied stand up for yourself. If you pretend your being bullied, segregated and looked down for attention then you should be ignored. Fucking malarkey.

What if they are poor working class trans people?

All that “ze”, “zir”, galaxy of pronouns shite can fuck off though. Also, the shite around [biological sex being a myth](https://www.forbes.com/sites/kimelsesser/2020/06/15/the-myth-of-biological-sex/) should be kept well away from schools, just sheer ideology dressed up as “science”.
