NCT free test review raises ‘serious questions’, Road Safety Authority told

  1. I reckon not enough people are pushing this with them.
I went looking for a test at the start of December, nothing in the closest 2 centres until May. Rang up and got put on the priority list.

On 12th of December I got a text to say I was booked in for a test on the 13th of Jan. Checked the charter, I was eligible for a free test. Rang them up, got told to email in, so I did.

The one who replied stated that due to staff shortages because of illness (covid and seasonal illness) and because they would be closed for 10 days over the Christmas period, I didn’t qualify. I pushed back on this demanding her to point out where it said that this was mentioned in the [customer charter section 5](https://www.ncts.ie/customer-charter/) so she snottily replied saying “in the interest of putting this matter to rest, I will mark you for a free test in the database”

If this was my mother or father, they would have accepted the first answer, so push back and make sure you are in line with the charter to get the free test.

  2. Heard about the backlog so I went to book my NCT in the first week of January even though my NCT doesn’t expire until the end of March. I looked at the 2 closest centres to me and mid May was the earliest I could get. It’s a joke. My car will probably pass in May and it will be back dated to the end of March, another part of the reason there’s a backlog.

  3. Too few centres to keep up with population increase. Not enough new cars being bough, older cars on roads longer because of high cost of new cars, thanks to the scam that is VRT… it’s all interlinked.
