Stoltenberg: Quran burnings should not prevent Swedish NATO membership

  1. The example of free expression shall never repress.

The example of free people shall never relent.

The example of freedom shall never retreat.

  2. if you take Muslim countries into NATO and they have a veto on new countries than I’m afraid that’s just what happens. Do people really expect Turkey to budge on that issue? Turkey knows its more strategically vital to the alliance than Sweden is…

  3. Why on earth do I need the right to burn books.

Yes, it sounds like a freedom feature..

But it shows hate towards a religion under the umbrella of freedom act.

Why? Why does this needs protection?

You want to hate something that is important to a country, then accept that this comes with a pricetag.

  4. The rejection had nothing to do with Quran burning in the first place. Turkey doesn’t want a country who harbors terrorists in the allience. If Sweden doesn’t trust Turkish legal system to judge these people, and I am sure some of them were accused unjustly, they can be judged elsewhere. Turkey also accused Sweden of supporting terrorists groups financially. They responded saying some gangs did that, however they didn’t assure they would prevent them. The Quran burning isn’t a legit reason. Erdogan is using that to flame the whole thing so he can get votes. Unlike Turkey, Hungary have almost no reason to refuse. They should bribe Orban first.

  5. I agree. Turkey is a secular state, so says the constitution. Maybe Saudi Arabia or Pakistan should care about it but not us. The people may be mad, but the state shouldn’t be caring about it.

  6. Turkey was preventing Swedish membership before Quran burning. Cuz Sweden supports YPJ which is basically PKK but in Syria. PKK is terrorist organization in the eyes of US, EU and bunch of other countries. That’s the real problem. What he said is just cover up.

  7. Of course it’s ridiculous to block a country’s NATO application because some random dickhead in that country burned a Quran. It’s indefensibly stupid. It would be like FIFA sanctioning all of Turkey because Saltbae touched the world cup trophy.

    The real reasons are probably two or three fold;

    1. Erdogan wants to exert more pressure on Sweden to extradite and prosecute Kurds
    2. Erdogan is doing this as a ploy to maintain good relations with Russia. Earlier in the war he profiled himself as the ‘peacemaker’ hosting talks between the Russians and Ukrainians. It’s important to project an image of neutrality and frustrating the membership of Sweden & Finland (for whatever reason) will bring him in Putin’s good graces.
    3. Conflict with other countries is a good way of distracting from domestic issues and gives him more air time to whip up his base with the elections coming up.

All in all we know Erdogan and he obviously believes that there are too many good reasons to profit from delaying and frustrating Sweden & Finland’s NATO applications. So that’s what he’ll do.

NATO just needs to tip the scales where Erdogan feels he has more to lose now than if he were to just step aside and ratify the applications. Guy only knows strength and power – they should stop engaging in discussion and just tighten the grip.

  8. I agree it, it should not, but let’s be real… burning religious books in 2023 just so you can antagonise a group of people (in this case the Muslims) is really wierd and has nothing to do with “freedom of speech”.

In Iran they burn American flags. I’ll repeat myself- burning religious books in 2023 is fucking lame and pretty extermist. Let people believe in whatever they want – as long as they follow laws there is nothing wrong with that.

  9. The title kinda makes it sound like Sweden is burning Qurans for heating on an industrial level

  10. I agree. As a Turkish, I feel uncomfortable with the current government’s hateful foreign policy. Current government (AKP) is not representing us and I hate how they are trying to turn our country into an Arabic/İslamic country. Well, soon they will be gone though. Election is coming.
