Unite union ambulance strikes planned for this week called off

  1. shouldnt even be allowed in the first place. Unions holding emergency service hostage. Nowadays really only those with unions are privileged.

  2. As an agenda for change staff member I am keeping everything crossed for a decent pay offer at last. We urgently need to do something about the huge number of NHS vacancies and pay is a huge part of it.

Supermarkets often pay more than NHS Band 2-3, Lidl pay more than Band 4. Its hard to retain staff when you are expecting them to do difficult and complex jobs but are only paying them the equivalent of entry level retail/hospitality rates.

  3. all striking does is punish the patients further. Leading to even more avoidable deaths. Preserving life of members of the public takes priority over how much you get paid. Don’t work for public emergency services if getting paid reasonably is your top priority.

  4. Possibly premature but strikes can always be rearranged if needs be. The government may see this as a sign of weakness so union bosses better be ready to negotiate hard and to stand by their members should they wish to get the best deal.

  5. Who would have thought it would be a good idea for the government to actually talk to them?

    What a radical concept!

  6. My prediction: union leaders are about to get bribed, and I don’t doubt they’ll take it to accept a single figure percentage pay rise.

  7. So I’m a bit confused over this. There is no singular ambulance service. It’s a bunch of contracts fulfilled by private companies working to a set fee from previous agreements with CCGs or their replacement organisations. How is Unite going to successfully get a pay rise when ambulance services arent paid for directly out of the treasury?

  8. Its all so bizarre to me. This last week alone I’ve been approached by two recruiters from the NHS to do work for them on an interim basis. They’re offering (for my experience etc) roughly 200 a day above market rate. 9 month contract, 1 day a week in the office, travel expenses covered and 650 a day. They’ll over pay in one area and try and scrimp in another. Just nonsense. Give the pay rises to those in the lower bands. The upper bands clearly aren’t struggling are they?
