The spotlights on Ellen Walshe today but I feel some praise should also be given to Siobhan Haughey, who broke a world record in the 200m freestyle and got gold in the process!

  1. Definitely doesn’t get enough recognition. She’s so strong from 100m to 800m which is insanely rare.

In running terms it’s almost equivalent to dominating a 200m sprint to a 5,000m race.

200m is probably her sweet spot but swimmers with that background tend to focus on shorter events as time goes on.

Mark Foster being a good example where he held the 1500m British record as a young lad, but for years held the 50m world record much later in his career.

  2. Her father is Irish, her grand-uncle was Charlie Haughey I think. It’s a pity she doesn’t swim for Ireland like Shane Ryan (born and raised in the USA with Irish parents), but it’s still great to see her doing well.

  3. Siobhan getting the spotlight over Ellen ? And she’s hasn’t been swimming for Ireland in fact she turned Ireland down multiple times.

  4. Her sister works in Ireland I believe. Hong Kong has a strong Irish history. Something like 9 Irish governors, Irish jesuit teaching system and the colonial legal dept was often called the Irish dept as it had so many Irish from both North and South. Its often forgotten that we helped run the Empire even after Independence.

  5. Ah yes the Asian-American athlete with a very loose connection to Ireland through one of the most corrupt politicians this country has ever seen. Why the media here keep grasping at strings to claim her as somewhat Irish is beyond me. Has she ever even visited these shores?
