Map of Europe with 1914 borders imposed on current borders

  1. In 1914 Bulgaria didnt have Southern Dobruja. It belonged to Romania until 1940. Also the parts in Eastern Macedonia are not correct. Only the Strumica area was Bulgarian. The western outlands were also part of Bulgaria until 1919.

  2. The terroritorial gains the Netherlands didn’t eventually gave back to Germany and are still part of the Netherlands now probably don’t even add up to a pixel on this map.

  3. The reds are so similar I thought Cyprus and Egypt were part of a buffed Ottoman Empire. Or maybe it’s just my eyes…

  4. Crazy seeing the Ottoman Empire overlaying current borders. Wonder if it would’ve been better or worse for that region to stay one unit.

  5. Would have been strange times in Ireland in 1914, the home rule acts had already begun to devide the nation, the organisations that brought about the rising were gaining support, and the country was on the cusp of boiling over into civil war

  6. Why is there ~8 random lakes on this map but not more?

If you have lakes on a map put them all there or just leave them out.

  7. I do have one gripe with this. It’s more of a technicality than a real gripe thou.

Finland was an independent Grand Duchy. Kinda like Luxembourg is today. Our Grand Duke just happened to be the Tzar of Russia.

Yes, in most practical matters, we were an extension of the Russian Empire due to sharing a leader, but we were, technically speaking, a separate entity. Yes, Russia never recognized us a separate state, but for all intents and purposes, we were one, barring the Grand Duke. It was more of an informal Real Union of states, as opposed to Political Union. Hard to explain… Basically, Finland was, in most aspects, an autonomous state. Albeit, the Years of Oppression sought to end that relative independence in 1899-1905 and then again 1908-1917, but that was cut short by the Russian Civil War, fall of the Russian Empire, and Finland declaring true independence amidst the chaos.

If you, for example, look at the wiki page for Tzar Nicholas the Second, it mentions him being the Emperor of Russia, King of Congress Poland and Grand Duke of Finland, as separate titles.

  8. Wonder how it would be if it stayed like this to today. Who would be the richest and where life would be the best.

  9. Switzerland, Luxemburg, Holland, Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Lichtenstein, Andorra, and Albania are so well behaved! 🤗
