Were in a housing crisis, its a crisis not an inconvenience.
There is no easy solutions in the short to medium term, The landlords are complaining about their rights, but what about people who will become homeless?
There is no easy win-win solution here until a large amount of new housing is built and that wont be done in a year or two.
I guess they could give the Landlords a temporary tax relief during the course of the eviction ban as long as they don’t put up rents, could be some kind of a compromise.
Imagine being a landlord and you have some scrote who hasn’t paid rent in a year whilst you’re still paying a mortgage on the property and there’s nothing you can do.
I hear you can sell directly to councils now, not only do they get out of stressful market, it also stops the tenants from being made homeless, people also get money back for their investment.
Though I know, it’s not so black and white but landlords might feel fucked over but have many of them suffered long term homelessness ?
I lack sympathy for many people who only see ways to extract wealth at the cost of others, on all levels of society.
There are some very good landlords still out there don’t get me wrong, though there are just as many that are not.
🤷♂️
People complain that they can’t get rental property. Landlords complain that they can’t remove a troublesome tenants. I can’t see any correlation. 😂
Let them sell their homes so.
What are they gonna do? Strike? 🤣
Parasite mad
What is shocking to me about this whole situation is that there is no onus on the RTB to publish up-to-date data regarding the number of eviction notices issued. The only metric that is brought up is the homeless figure. My hunch is that the introduction of the current ban has lead to a massive uptick of notices issues, I was one of those issued with a notice, but I’d like to be proven wrong.
Landlords will win.
They’ve become too powerful and greedy in an unchecked industry.
Oh and not forgetting the number of elected officials and civil servants who are landlords themselves.
We’ll be homeless and/or broke and thankful to them for their efforts to maintain their lifestyles.
I will not stand idly by while a dragon burns my hold and slaughters my people!
Its funny they talking about the lack of bus drivers when at the moment no one can get a driving license 😂

I think at the very least , the state must agree to reimburse landlords for any losses incurred as a result.
I can’t imagine A supermarket allowing people to shop
Lift if the state put in a ban on prosecutions shoplifters
These are rentals not their permanent residents. They are basically looking for the same rights on the rental houses for the actual houses they live in on a daily basis that is Ludacris.
That’s the problem in this country Landlords have gotten away with it for far too long now.
There needs to be lifetime rentals and proper protection of tenure.
Rents have never been at a all time high and landlords are laughing all the way to the bank in fairness.. The fact they want pressure zones to be removed is a joke.
Basically landlords want absolute control over there tenants and be able to throw them out for the slightest infraction or If the tenant has the audacity to enforce the rights as a tenant.
Was there ever any serious consideration given to banning Airbnbs like other cities have? Barcelona, Palma)
I know is only a partial fix but seems like the housing issue is going to take multiple different approaches to resolve and just focusing on landlords (while a help) doesn’t seem like it’s ever going to be enough.
You shouldn’t have gotten greedy then, landlords!
There’s only about 1000 rentals left in a country of 5M. Just a few more to go to get to zero
I’d love to be at their counter protest
They really should adjust rents based on location, quality, and size of the property. In many countries, rents are based on that.
In here, they just make it look pretty and put rent for 2k+.
I know that many places are on rental pressure zone and they can only increase 4% yearly, because of that, many new built to rent start at such a high price. We need rental caps NOW. Otherwise, prices will just keep going up.
Our wages don’t increase 4% yearly, why does rent should? It is unsustainable for everyone.
They should encourage landlords to keep rents lower. For example, if they didn’t increase the rent for 2 years, they should get some tax back. Keeping the same tenants for over 3 years would also be beneficial, and it would encourage landlords to do long-term renting. I still don’t understand why Ireland doesn’t have long-term rental contracts for over 3 years. In many countries in the continent, entire families live for over 10 years on long term contract and, in most of the cases, the families ended up buying the place. Long-term rents are great because it keeps rents low and they don’t increase yearly or when new contracts are signed.
Tough situation.
Nobody wants people to become homeless but policies such as this will only decrease the housing supply in the long run, thus making things even worse.
Also recommend joining CATU if you have issues with your tenancy, they were very helpful.
Reads like it’s unconstitutional, and if I was a LL I’d feel pretty aggrieved by it.
So likely a legal challenge, and further exiting of the market by landlords.
While we don’t deserve this mess, the electorate shares part of the blame for this disaster for demonizing LLs and forcing the policy changes over the past couple of years.
Leeches will ‘not stand idly by’ if bleeding wound is bandaged.
Freeze rents and simultaneously make rental income tax free,(or subject to the lower rate) in RPZ’s around the country until supply catches up.
There u go. Fixed it. Everyone wins apart from the states coffers ,(which are already 5billion in the black).
That’s weird.
I thought they made their income by standing idly by.
The emergency in housing isn’t an emergency of unfair evictions, we’ve all heard some horrible stories but there are procedures for those and if you look at the stats evictions in ireland are at around the European average.
The issue is lack of supply driving up prices. Both in homes for sale and homes for rent.
So the solution to the housing crisis is not an eviction ban. So let’s stop pretending that it is.
LOL that will be the first time landlords will “not stand idly by”. Unfortunate but funny headline.
Just an FYI for all the landlords calling for a free market. The state pumped 1.2 billion into the private rental economy last year. Rents would be a lot lower if the state turned of the public money tap. But we would also have a lot more homless people. Every one wants a free market until it effects their own bottom line.
Homeowners should be allowed to do what they want with their property. A 6 month notice of eviction should be put in place for tenants.
A balance needs to be struck where landlords earn from their investment but cant continuously lash up their rent every 6 months.
Isn’t “standing idly by” just the job description of being a landlord?
That’s insane. Squeeze the supply in the middle of housing crisis
Landlords can eat shit
Good.
Private property ownership rights is the main pillar of a functioning society/country.
Anyone who doesn’t like it can move to Venezuela, South Africa, Argentina or similar sh*tholes.
They can get fucked.
There was a similar situation in the news a couple of months ago, but the same thing happened to a buddy of mine. His mam died and the dad had gone a few years before, so he inherited the home. Head was spinning from it, so he decided to rent it out to a couple he knew through friends while he did three years working in Australia. Told the couple he was happy enough for them to live there while he was gone, but gave them a firm date as to when he was coming back and they needed to leave by which they fully agreed to. He emailed them six months in advance to give them formal notice, and they said no. The evictions ban came in, and now that date came and went last year, and he’s currently sharing a place with three other lads since that’s all he could find and afford.
people on this sub are going to vote in the irish hugo chaves next by the looks of these comments
If they strike I’d say the counter protest would be overwhelming.
