See how things go.

  1. Soc Dems to become the new PDs, end up in government with either FG or FF and then evaporate from existence come the following election.

Couldn’t see enough TDs joining Soc Dems for them to become an alternative in 2025.

  2. I’m already a member of both parties. nice to see people give both options a fair shake, hopefully a coalition between them could be a thing in the future. The parties, I mean. Not the wans. Well, maybe the wans too.

  3. Sinn Féin have plateaued in their gains of support and it is currently a little shy of being able to form a government, even with a (fairly disastrous) coalition of the left. They can’t really gain significant more votes now from the existing government parties and that’s where they need to pull them from.

Step up Soc Dems. Soc Dems leadership change is definitely going to result in 2 things – more Soc Dems candidates and more Soc Dems voters. If they can follow that up with a believable manifesto they can definitely prise away *some* voters from all government parties and some from the shakier leftist parties.

I, for instance, will simply not vote for SF, under no circumstances. I do, however, recognise the need for change at the top and my own political beliefs have shifted towards social policies in the last decade. Provided they don’t fuck things up with a fairytale manifesto, Soc Dems will have my vote in the GE.

They’d only need a gain of 15 or so seats to be in a position to junior SF in the next govt. It’s the most viable alternative. Let’s see how it shakes out.

  4. Americans: “Trump, DeSantis, Biden, etc.”
Irish: “Yanks and their elections. It’s not until November 2024…”
Also Irish: “General election in 2025, better start making memes!”

  5. Id be fairly confident Soc Dem members wont end up featuring in the Ditch, or the Special Criminal Court for that matter.

For the voter sick of FFG and not totally comfortable with SF, I hope they build something.

  6. Holly Cairns is the most inspirational leader to hit Irish politics in living memory. Your man Gorman in the greens was pretty good but bowed out the moment someone threw some shit at him. Bit disappointing.

  7. Labour really fucked us over but I’m sure this ideologically identical party formed by ex-labour politicians will have a completely different outcome…

  8. So whats with all the posts of people comparing these two? cant we just vote both? its why we have STV for a reason. I would vote both if i could, but we don’t have an SD’s in my constituency
